BeBop

statistic traits:Virtuosic! Bebop vocabulary is typically rapid, with many notes.
•  The tempo of most bebop tunes is usually quick, giving the improviser a chance to
show off their technique.
•  The two primary innovators of the bebop language are
Charlie Parker and Dizzy
Gillespie.
•  This style was a huge break from the early jazz tradi(ons set forth by Louis Armstrong.
innovations: Became extremely popular by the end of the 1940s.
•  Many (most) jazz musicians were ajemp(ng to emulate the bebop style – some needing years off of touring in
order to master this new language.
•  Some jazz musicians even reCred because bebop was just too difficult.
•  By the end of the 1940s hundreds of musicians were performing and recording in the bebop style.

Louis Armstrong

A

his life:1901 – 1971
•  Popularized the trumpet, early jazz, and eventually served as cultural and goodwill ambassador to the United States.
•  His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz.
•  Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to “cross over”, whose skin color was secondary to his music in an America that
was extremely racially divided.

What it is:designated as an official site for slave music and dance
What happened there:
Thought by many as being the birthplace of the music and culture of New Orleans.
•  Besides the music and dancing, Congo Square also provided enslaved blacks with a place in which they
could express themselves spiritually. This brief religious freedom on Sundays resulted in the prac)ce of voodoo ceremonies.
•  Many of the characteris)cs of the music that was made in this place
later evolved into what is currently known as “jazz music.”
