Final- Plate Tectonics Flashcards
How do you determine the contour interval?
Look through the margin in the map, an find where the contour map is printed.
How do you find the elevation of the given point on a topographic map?
Look at the numbers shown and calculate the distance.
How do you determine whether a slope is steep or gentle?
If the lines are close, then the slope is steep. If the lines are far apart, then the slope is gentle.
How do you know which way a river is flowing?
It shows a v-line seperating
What are the three types of plate boundaries and how are they different?
Transform- Earthquakes ( plates rubbing against each other)
Convergent- Forms mountains, subduction, volcanoes (plates move towards each other)
Divergent- Mid-ocean ridge, convection currents (PLates separate)
What is the mid-ocean ridge?
An underwater valley
How can you use islands created by a hot spot to evaluate plate movement?
Allows lava to come up
Where is the Ring of Fire Located?
Hawaii, Alaska, West Coast
What causes an Earthquake?
When the plate boundaries slip/slide each other, Transform
What is earthquake intensity a measure of?
Richter Mercalli
List three types of seismic waves and describe how they are different
S-waves: Second Most Destructive
P-Waves: Liquid Gas
Surface Waves: Most Destructive
How much stronger is the magnitude 7 earthquake than a magnitude 4 earthquake?
Each level is 10X (1,000)
Where do earthquakes occur?
They occur on the fault lines
Compare and contrast lava and magma
Magma- Inside the volcano
Lava- Outside of the volcano
How are viscosity, silica content, explosiveness, and volcano shape related?
High viscosity, high explosiveness, high silica, high thickness
