Q

What atmosphere does the description of the weather create? What kind of events might the weather foreshadow?

A

The dark and stormy weather creates a spooky atmosphere. This type of weather typically indicates something bad is going to happen.

25
Q

In this passage, what do you learn about the three wishes made possible by the monkey’s paw? Predict what you think will happen in the story.

A

The three wishes resulted in death for the first man to possess the monkey’s paw. Im not sure who, but I think someone in the story will die.

26
Q

How does Herbert’s Joking about the monkey’s paw contrast with the established by the sergeant-major? What might Herbert’s attitude foreshadow?

A

Herbert’s joking about the monkey’s paw creates a lighter mood than before. His attitude might foreshadow something bad, as he seems positive that nothing will happen to him, and this might cause him to be careless or reckless.

27
Q

What does the description of the visitor suggest about what he might have come to say? How is this an example of foreshadowing?

A

Because the visitor seems uncertain and nervous about approaching the house, this could mean he is the bearer of bad news. The visitor’s action foreshadows the news the Whites will soon receive about Herbert’s death.

28
Q

Based on Mrs. White’s behavior, what can you infer about her state of mind?

A

Mrs. White is speaking rapidly, panting, and quivering with excitement. She physically drags her husband towards the door, insisting that he bring her son back. She is not considering the consequences of bringing someone back from the dead. Her grief for her son seems to have made her go mad.

29
Q

Sequence of events of the story

A
  1. The sergeant-major visits the White Family and tells them about the monkey’s paw.
  2. Mr. White uses the monkey’s paw to wish for two hundred pounds.
  3. Mr. and Mrs. White receive word that their son Herbert was killed in an accident at work. They are given two hundred pounds as compensation.
  4. Mr. White uses the monkey’s paw to wish for Herbert’s return from the dead.
  5. There is a loud banging at the door; Mr. White uses his last wish.
  6. The knocking stops and the road is empty.
30
Q

State the warning that the sergeant-major gives Mr. White`

A

The sergeant-major says “I warn you of the consequences”

31
Q

Recall the spell that was put on the monkey’s paw by the fakir. Why did the fakir put the spell on the paw?

A

The fakir put a spell on the paw that allowed three men to make three wishes with it. He wanted to show that fate rules people’s lives.

32
Q

Identify a quotation or action taken by the sergeant-major, Mr. White, and Mrs. White that shows each believes in the monkey’s paw.

A

The sergeant-major says “It has caused enough mischief already”. Mrs. White believes a second wish will bring back her son. Mr. White drops the monkey’s paw because he feels it move in his hand.

33

Name Mr. White’s first wish

A

Mr. White first wishes for two hundred pounds

34
Q

Identify the limit the fakir put on the monkey’s paw

A

Each person could be granted three wishes.

35
Q

Infer what might have happened to make the sergeant-major feel this way about the monkey’s paw

A

We can infer that the sergeant-major’s wishes resulted in something bad and painful happening in his life.

36
Q

Apply the fakir’s idea to real life. What does the story suggest about the role of fate in human life?

A

The story suggests that toying with fate produces dire consequences.

37
Q

Write an example from the text that foreshadows death, evil, or fate and explain its significance.

A

When the sergeant-major says: “He [the fakir] wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow,” he foreshadows that messing with fate by wishing with the monkey’s paw will end badly.

38
Q

Determine what human weakness led to Mr. White’s last wish. Describe how you would have handled the situation in Mr. White’s place.

A

I think the weakness that led to Mr. White’s last wish was pure fear. He was scared of the outcome of seeing someone you wished to be back from the dead. Maybe he thought his son would come back as a monster or ghost and didn’t think that, as his father, he would be able to tolerate seeing Herbert like that. I think I would have a similar reaction to Mrs. White. I’m very family-oriented and losing a loved one would affect me heavily, and I would do anything to bring them back.
