Final Exam Review Flashcards
Describe the 3 main rock categories: Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
Igneous:
-Derived from magma
-Classified my mineral composition
-Intrusive/Plutonic: Igneous rock that is formed beneath the surface in cooling magma chambers (slow rate of cooling, large crystals)
-Extrusive/Volcanic: Igneous rock that is formed from the expulsion of magma above ground (cooling of lava at a quick rate)
Sedimentary:
-Formed from burial, compaction and cementation
Typically stratified (deposited in many layers)
-Clastic (cemented) and chemical/biochemical
Metamorphic:
-Any rock changed by increased heat and pressure (contact and regional)
-Banding and folds
-Parent rock (low grade leading to high grade)
How was BC formed geologically?
