A visual, gestural language used by Deaf people, primarily in the United States.
ASL
- Created by hearing educators to make English visible for deaf students.
- A sign corresponds to the English word, oftentimes regardless of meaning.
Signed English
- Focuses on the loss/disability
- Does not engage in Deaf community
- Often prefers lip reading and amplification devices instead of sign language
- Tends to label self hard-of-hearing or hearing impaired

- Considers self a cultural minority, not a person with a disability.
- Proud member of Deaf Community
- Uses sign language as primary form of communication
- Does not want to be fixed.
