Final Exam - Muscles and Foramen Flashcards
Posterior belly of digastric
CN VII - Facial N.
Elevates hyoid bone
Stylohyoid
CNVII - Facial N.
Elevates hyoid bone

CNVII - Facial N.
Facial Expression
Anterior belly of digastric
CNV - Mandibular Division of Trigeminal N. (V-3)
Elevates hyoid bone
Mylohyoid
N. to Mylohyoid from Mandibular Division of Trigeminal N. (V3)
Tightens and elevates oral floor; draws hyoid bone forward during swallowing, helps open and laterally move the mandible for chewling.
Temporalis
Maseter
Medial and lateral pterygoid
Mandibular division of trigeminal N.
Temporalis is innervated by auricotemporal N.
Muscles of mastication elevate the mandible or close the jaw. Lateral pterygoid bilaterally protrudes the jaw with help from masseters and medial pterygoid.
Lateral pterygoid unilaterraly - moves jaw to lateral
Trapezius
Spinal Accesory N
Steady scapula on the thorax; rotates glenoid cavity superiorly.
SCM
Spinal accessory n.
unilaterally tilts head to ipsilateral side, laterally flexes the neck and rotates face to point superiorly, bilaterally flexes the neck “chin to chest”
Infrahyoid muscles (except thyrohyoid)
Ansa cervicalis (C1-C3 ventral rami) Connect hard structures of the neck to the sternum. When contracted, pull structures down for swallowing.
Thyrohyoid
C1 ventral ramus (hitchhikes iwth hypoglossal n.).
Thyrohyoid: depresses hyoid and draws the larynx and hyoid down for swallowing.
Geniohyoid
C1 ventral ramus
Draws the hyoid bone forward during swallowing and helps laterally move the manidble for chewing.
Palatopharyngeus
Vagus N.
Tightens soft palate
Palatoglossus
Vagus N
Elevates posterior tongue and depresses the soft palate
Muscularis Uvula
Vagus N.
Shortens and raises uvula
Levator veli palatine
Vagus N.
Elevates soft palate (say “ahh”)
Salpingopharyngeus
Vagus N.
Elevates the pharynx
Sup. mid., inf - Constrictors
Vagus N.
Constrictors: constrict pharynx
Stylopharyngeus
Glossopharyngeal N.
Elevates pharynx
Tensor Veli Palatini
Trigeminal N.
Tenses soft palate
Genioglossus
Hypoglossal N.
Wags, protrudes, depresses tongue; rolls tongue edges to create a trough
Hyoglossus
Hypoglossal N.
Depresses, shortens tongue and pulls sides inferiorly
Styloglossus
Hypoglossal N.
retracts, curls sides of tongue, forms a trough for swallowing with genioglossus muscle.
Superior and inferior longitudinal muscles
Hypoglossal n.
Sup - curls the tongue up, shortens tongue
Inf - curls tongue longitudinally, depresses apex, shortens tongue
ALL larynx EXCEPT cricothyroid
Recurrent laryngeal N.
Adducts vocal cords
Cricoarytenoid aBducts the vocal cords so tehy can relax.
