Final Exam Flashcards
System software
software designed to provide a platform to other software. Ex) operating software
3 types of software
operating systems, device drivers and utility software
Application software
is any program, or group of programs, that is designed for the end user (for the consumer) ex) spreadsheet
Utility software
software designed to help to analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a computer. It is used to support the computer infrastructure
Input device
is a piece of computer hardware equipment used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or information appliance. Ex) keyboards and mouse
Output device
is any peripheral that receives data from a computer. Ex) monitor and projector
Unidirectional microphone
Picks up sound predominantly from one direction.
Omnidirectional microphone
pick up sound with equal gain from all sides or directions of the microphone.
Inkjet printer
characters are made with jets of ink
Non impact printer
A type of printer that does not operate by striking a head against a ribbon. ex) laser printer or non impact and inkjet printers
Impact printer
class of printers that work by banging a head or needle against an ink ribbon to make a mark on the paper. Ex)dot-matrix printers and line printers
Parallel and serial
Since one bit follows another in Serial Transmission whereas, in Parallel Transmission multiple bits are sent together. Parallel transmission is faster as the data is transmitted using multiples lines whereas, in Serial transmission data flows through a single wire.
Modem
A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines
Ethernet
a system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or more systems.
DVI
used to connect a video source, such as a video display controller, to a display device, such as a computer monitor.
Toggle key
used to alternate the input mode of a group of keys on a keyboard.
Mainframe
the central processing unit and primary memory of a computer.
A webcast is updated automatically
False
What is B2B?
business to business.” It refers to sales you make to other businesses rather than to individual consumers
Satellite
-provides high speed internet -used in rural area
Cable
an insulated wire or wires having a protective casing and used for transmitting electricity or telecommunication signals.
What does a system software do?
-helps run the computer -coordinates instructions between application software -helps manage system resources
Computer subsystem?
-storage system -CPU system -memory system
Expansion card
a circuit board that can be inserted in a computer to give extra facilities or memory.
Cache memory
used by the central processing unit of a computer to reduce the average time or energy to access data from the main memory. Smaller, faster memory, closer to a processor core, which stores copies of the data from frequently used main memory locations.
Front side bus
-is a computer communication interface -connected to the CPU system memory
Expansion hub
is a low-cost education device that can communicate with any computer
ALU (arithmetic logic unit)
-the part of a computer that performs all arithmetic computations -one component of the CPU
Fastest optical drive on the market?
Blu-ray drives
Computer network
two or more computers connected with software and hardware so they can communicate
Network node
some devices that are part of network infrastructure (network connectivity gear) can also be network nodes: hubs, routers, and switches.
LAN network
is a computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most often, a LAN is confined to a single room, building
A peer-to-peer network
-are computer systems which are connected to each other via the Internet. -most common type of home network
Client/server network
one centralized, powerful computer is a hub to which many less powerful personal computers or workstations are connected.
WAN network
extends over a large geographical distance/place.
Switches
network multiple computers together
Radio waves
-wireless network -transmission medium
Transceiver
is a hardware device designed to connect computers or electronic devices within a network, allowing them to transmit and receive messages.
Twisted-pair cable
-two insulated wires twisted around one another -megabits (slow)
Analog
images are representation of light waves or continuous waves
An analog to digital converter chip?
converts sound waves from a voice into digital format
The amount of RAM recommended for most systems, is measured in
gigahertz
Memory modules
small circuit boards that hold series of RAM chips
To make sure your computer performs reliably, you can do all the following EXCEPT: -increase the front side bus speed -run the disk defragmenter -clean out your startup folder -clear out unnecessary files
-increase the front side bus speed
What port wouldn’t be common to have in a computer today?
parallel
Info about your computers video card can be found in the
advanced settings of the display settings dialog box
A computer system becomes memory bound when
there is not enough RAM installed
The CPU is connected to the system memory by the
front side bus
When referring to hard drives, access time is measured in
milliseconds
Running the Disk defragmenter utility will
make the hard drive work more efficiently
The greatest nonvolatile storage capacity in the computers system is found in the
hard drive
If you are wondering wether you need more RAM, which subsystem you should evaluate?
memory
PC hard drives have storage capacities of up to
1.5 terabytes
When referring to hard drives, seek time and latency are two factors that make up
access time
An Ethernet port is technically called
RJ-45 jack
what form of portable storage is considered as magnetic media?
floppy disk
CPU consists of what two partS?
the control unit and arithmetic logic unit
The control unit is part of?
the CPU
What storage is referred to as optical media?
DVD
What type of memory is referred to the amount of RAM that is actually on the memory modules
physical memory
All of the following are forms of RAM except: -XRAM -DRAM -SRAM -SDRAM
XRAM
CPU is measured in
hertz
Where is the CPU located
the motherboard
