A term for a figure of speech. It is a story or picture with a hidden meaning. The characters are symbols which represent particular ideas. The story has a figurative meaning, not just a literal one.
Allegory
The repetition of identical or similar sounds at the beginning of words or in stressed syllables.
Alliteration
Using figurative language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses.
Imagery
A figure of speech that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things.
Simile
A word or phrase used to compare two unlike objects, ideas, thoughts or feelings to provide a clearer description.
Metaphor
A sentence or phrase, usually expressing a popular or common thought or idea, that has lost originality, ingenuity, and impact by long overuse
Cliché
A statement that seems contradictory or absurd but is actually valid or true.
Paradox
Act of placing two things side by side for comparison.
Juxtaposition
Figure of speech.

Process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.

Indirect characterization
Repeats the same words or phrases a few times to make an idea clearer.

Personification
Figure of speech employed by writers or speakers to intentionally make a situation seem less important than it really is.
Understatement
An extreme exaggeration used to make a point.
