  1. Observations = Anecdotal Notes/Notebook, labels or sticky notes
  2. Questioning = framing questions which explore issues that are critical to the development of students’ understanding
  3. Discussion = facilitating student discussion can assess student understanding by listening to the student responses and by taking anecdotal notes
  4. Learning/Response Logs = Learning logs are used for students’ reflections on the material they are learning, Response logs are a good way to examine student thinking
  5. Graphic Organizers = Venn diagram, brainstorming web, T-chart, KWL chart
  6. Peer/Self Assessment = students become metacognitive and are more aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses

A

In terms of systems engineering, present policy seems to treat the classroom as a black box.

Inputs = from the outside are fed in or make demands—pupils, teachers, other resources, management rules and requirements, parental anxieties, tests with pressures to score highly, and so on.

Outputs = pupils who are more knowledgeable and competent, better test results, teachers who are more or less satisfied, and more or less exhausted.
