Futurist eschatology: sees the kingdom of God as being brought about by a dramatic intervention in human history at some point in the future.
Inaugurated eschatology: suggest that the kingdom of God is already present but will be fully realized in the future
Realized Eschatology: claims that the kingdom of God is already fully present in the coming of Jesus.
Be able to identify and explain the six terms outlined in this section.
- The Parousia: the return of Christ, usually translated as the coming but literally has a sense of presence as oppose of absence. The SA has avoided speculation about detail of the return of Christ.
- The millennium: is the thousands-year reign of Christ on earth.
- A-millennialism: not a period of time as such, but Christ reign on earth through his people.
- Post-millennialism: there will be a period of the kingdom of God on earth, or a thousand years of power for the gospel followed by the return of Christ.
- Pre-millennialism: teach that Christ will return to earth to reign for a thousand years before satan’s final overthrow.
- Dispensationalism: take the pre-millennial view further. They see the millennium as a further dispensation, or a period in God’s dealings with humanity. In their understanding the coming of Christ will be preceded by the ‘rupture’ of the church. The believer will be taken up in the clouds to meet Christ at the time of return.
