Q

Compare and Contrast Justification and Regeneration

A

Regeneration is distinct from justification, but closely related to it, and the
two are inseparable in our own experience. Justification is God’s work for
us, the forgiveness of our sins and our change of status before God. It
does not depend on our moral renewal. Regeneration is God’s work in us,
the gift of the indwelling Spirit and the beginning of a life of holiness. It is
our call to the Christ-like life and involves our moral renewal.

Q

Be able to describe, in detail, the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church.

A

At Pentecost the Holy Spirit became the creator of the Church through
which God initiated the reign of Christ and the mission of his people (John
17:20; Acts 1:8; 2:1-41). In the ongoing life of the Church the Spirit initiates
and seeks to guide and sustain genuine religious revival and spiritual
renewal.
-He releases and directs new life in the Church (Acts 8:26-40; 10:44;
13:2).
- He creates fellowship (2 Corinthians 13:14).
- He inspires sacrificial love (1 Corinthians 13:1-14)
- He imparts humility (Philippians 2:1-3).
- He provides believers with spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12-14;
Ephesians 4:7-13).
The freely chosen human actions of repentance and faith, made possible
by the grace of God, and the renewing, restoring and recreating power of
the Holy Spirit are each necessary if God’s saving action is to be a reality in
the life of the believer.

Q

Regarding the temptation of Jesus – Lodahl makes what two points?

A
  1. The options must have been appealing; and
  2. The options must have been truly within Jesus’ reach.
    - In order for the covenantal possibilities of faithful obedience to be
respected, as well as fulfilled, it must be the case that Jesus could have
    yielded to temptation.
    · Yielding to those temptations or sinning had to have been a real
possibility – or else Jesus’ wilderness testing, not to mention His whole
life and ministry, is nothing but a sham, a puppet show put on for our
inspiration. If, however we take Jesus’ temptation seriously, it appears
that the root issue with which he dealt in the wilderness, coming as it
did immediately after His baptism and anointing by the Holy Spirit to do
the work of the Messiah, was a method and means by which He was to
    fulfill God’s calling upon Him.

Q

How did John Wesley distinguish between justification and human
righteousness?

A

John Wesley made a significant distinction between justification, which
he sees in terms of imputed righteousness, and being actually made
just and righteous, which he equates with sanctification (Chapter 10).
Suggesting that sanctification is the fruit of justification, Wesley argues
that God in justifying us does something for us through the Son; when
we are sanctified the Spirit does the work in us.
