Mount Vesuvius was in an inactive volcano that lay above the city of Pompeii. Most of what we know about the eruption was due to Pliny the younger. The people of Pompeii had never seen anything like this before. It killed many people when it erupted in August 79 A.D. The city was buried for many centuries before it was re-discovered
