What are several key principles for the “14 fundamentals of following the living Prophet”?

A
  • prophet = only man who speaks for the Lord
  • The living prophet = more vital to us than the standard works and a dead prophet
  • prophet will never lead the Church astray
  • The prophet = no earthly credentials required
  • The prophet does not have to say “Thus saith the Lord” to give us scripture
  • The prophet tells us what we NEED TO KNOW
  • The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning
  • The prophet can receive revelation on any matter - temporal or spiritual
  • The prophet may be involved in civic matters
  • The two groups who have the greatest difficulty following the prophet are: the proud who are learned; rich
  • The prophet will not necessarily be popular
  • the First Presidency - the highest quorum in the church
  • Follow prophet and presidency = be blessed; reject them and suffer

Q

Apostasy

A
"The journey of a thousand miles," states an ancient Chinese proverb, "begins with the first step." It is unlikely that anyone would spontaneously and immediately apostatize and fight against Zion. That ultimate destination is reached step by step, starting with one small unchecked act or attitude that in time exponentially escalates to the point of open rebellion against the servants of the Lord.
From powerpoint:
Five ways to criticize the Lord’s anointed:
claim leader is from an obscure place
slow of speech
lacks prestige
familiar with the people
personal appearance
The “D’s” of murmuring and rebellion:
•Doubt
•Disbelief
•Disregard
•Defiance
•Destruction

Q

Counsel Responses and Consequences

A

“and listen to the counsel of him who has ordained you from on high, who shall speak in your ears the words of wisdom, that salvation may be unto you in that thing which you have presented before me, saith the Lord God.”
For when God has a Prophet on the earth, and that Prophet tells the people what to do, and they neglect to do it, they must suffer for it. I bear witness before you this day, in the name of the Lord God of Israel, that no people can treat lightly the sayings of a Prophet of God, whom He places on the earth to direct His people, and prosper.

Key concepts:
Lord Counsels through His living servants, but agency is ours.
No forced obedience
Our lives and well-being depend on hearkening to His counsel
Examples to know:
Hauns Mill - Jacob Haun came to Joseph saying that they were fine to stay at Hans Mill and would be safe if they all stuck together as Saints. Joseph warned him against this but did not force him to obey the instruction of the Lord. Consequently, and sadly, many lives were lost at Haun’s mill
Ephraim Hanks -
adobe house foundation - he was asked to rebuild it.
beard experience - Brigham asked him to shave his beard, so he did.
Hand cart company - the spirit prompted him to go rescue some of the handcart companies. He headed into the mountains when a big snow storm hit. He couldn’t continue with his wagon, so he went on horse-back to find the company. This is true obedience to the Lord’s promptings.

29
Q

Living Oracles and the Standard Works

A

These writings are often referred to as the canon of a given religion or denomination. For example, to Christians the Bible-both Old Testament and New Testament-is canon; to the Jews the Old Testament is canon, with the Torah (or first five books of the Old Testament) holding special significance; the Koran is canon to Muslims.
This inclusion of the living oracles and the myriad other inspired messages makes our body of scripture ever-expanding and never-ending. Thus there are two different yet complementary categories of scripture in the Church-the standard works, which are canonized, and the inspired messages of living and now-deceased oracles that are not canonized but are authoritative nonetheless.
There are in the Church four volumes of canonized scripture-the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. As Latter-day Saints we seldom speak of them as “canonized scripture,” since the word canon in the traditional religious vernacular often carries a connotation of finality and closure. - - often referred to as the Standard Works
An inspired message or document becomes canonized, and thus included in the body of the standard works, by a dual process.
it is presented to the Church by the President of the Church with the unanimous consent of the First Presidency and the Twelve, who hold the keys of declaring doctrine and establishing scripture for the Church.
it must be accepted by the vote of the Church according to the law of common consent. By this vote of acceptance the members of the Church bind themselves by covenant to uphold it as scripture.
It forms a standard by which even the living oracles of God may instruct themselves, measure themselves, and correct themselves.

From the slides:
A document becomes canonized and therefore part of the Standard Works by:
•First: A proposal to modify the canon of the Church is initiated by the President of the Church
•Second: it must have unanimous consent of the First Presidency and the Twelve
•Third: it must be accepted by the vote of the Church according to the law of common consent

scripture can also come to us through the living prophets
It is the uncanonized, inspired utterances of the Lord’s servants that provide the continual nourishment needed for spiritually healthy souls.
“tests” of the validity and inspiration of “scripture.”
is it in harmony with the standard works?
is it in harmony with the teachings of the living prophets?
is it in harmony with the witness of the Holy Ghost?

Q

Our Future Safety

A

???

31
Q

Chapter 1

A

Understand that the Lord reveals His will to living prophets now just as He did in the past. Today’s problems are met with divine solutions. Remember the story of Hugh B. Brown and the British jurist (see explanation below) (pages 5-6). Revelation is constant in this dispensation. The Lord’s Church is built on the foundation of apostles and prophets. The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are sustained as prophets, seers, and revelators. Joseph Smith is the great seer of the latter-days (D & C: 21:1) Know the definitions of prophet, seer, and revelator (pgs 9-10). (remember seers and revelators are also prophets too) Prophets help us build faith in Jesus Christ and teach for our benefit. Safety comes in knowing and applying the teachings of the living prophets. (review Naaman, p. 12) We need to hearken—more than listening, we need to act.
Definitions from the book:
Prophet: “a person who has been called by and speaks for God”
Primary Responsibility of a Prophet “is to bear witness of Christ”.
Seer: “a person authorized of God to see with spiritual eyes things which God has hidden from the world”
Revelator: “they reveal His will in both spiritual and temporal affairs”
Seers and Revelators are prophets, too
Seer: only a seer can use special interpreters, or a urim and thummim, they know the past present and future.
Revelator: makes known, something unknown
The Role of Prophets Seers and Revelators:
Communicate his will
reveal his divine character
preach righteousness and denounce sin
when inspired, foretell future events
Bear witness of Christ (Primary responsibility)
Hugh B. Brown & British Jurist Story
Hugh B. Brown was asking the british jurist why God wouldn’t speak to us anymore. Here are the reasons he proposed to him:
He doesn’t have the power
He doesn’t love us
We don’t need Him because we’ve advanced in technology and education enough
British Jurist thought all of these reasons were blasphemous, so the jurist said “there never was a time in the history of the world when the voice of God was needed as it is needed now”.
Hugh B. Brown confirmed this truth and taught him that God does speak and has spoken in this day.

Q

Chapter 2

A

The living prophet possesses all the keys of the priesthood in fullness. He also presides over all priesthood quorums and members of the Church. The Lord leads the Church through revelation to His prophet. (note President Packer’s story of at beginning of chapter → see description below) Some believe in past prophets but reject the living ones. (note Elder Kimball quote from five key quotes learning suites doc). Notice the full text of the President Benson talk “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet” talk. The word of the Lord to the living prophet is of utmost importance to us. The Lord will never allow the prophet to lead the Church astray. (Divine Guarantee) Living prophet’s words take priority over past statements on the same issue. (p. 18)
President Packer’s Experience:
President Kimball was in Denmark when he visited a small church (not LDS) to see statues of Christ. Talking to the keepers of this old church, he taught about how the priesthood keys have been restored on the earth. The following is a quote at the end of this experience in the words of President Packer:
“Then came an experience I will never forget. President Kimball, this gentle prophet, turned to President Johan H. Benthin, of the Copenhagen Stake, and in a commanding voice said, ‘I want you to tell every prelate [religious leader] in Denmark that they do not hold the keys! I hold the keys!’

Q

Chapter 3

A

Succession is a sacred time. The Assistant President of the Church—Hyrum. We don’t speculate at such times. Know that Assistant President of the Church was once a key leadership role. Understand the important principles including timing of succession. The Lord has established the order of succession in the Presidency of the Church. Remember experience of Joseph Smith conferring the keys (p. 31 → joseph felt he might die soon so he took intensive amount of time training the 12 on the doctrines of the gospel and sealed all he had upon the heads of the 12) Note experience of the Saints in Nauvoo when Brigham Young was confirmed as Joseph Smith’s successor (p. 33 → the saints heard the voice of Joseph Smith as Brigham spoke to the congregation). Know how seniority is defined in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles today as well as how it was initially determined in 1835. (p. 34) Know what a solemn assembly is and its part in the sustaining of a new presidency—beginning with the presidency of John Taylor.
Why we don’t have an assistant President: Because requiring two witnesses to establish the work is not required once the work is established.
- only the President has the authority to exercise ALL the keys
- Seniority: was once determined by age, but is now determined by date of ordination
- At the president’s death there is no first presidency (it is completely dissolved!), they return to their respective places of seniority
- the president receives revelation on when to reorganize, the final decision is made with unanimous support of the 12
- Solemn Assemblies: Began with President John Taylor gather together as a conference for a sustaining opportunity
- three purposes, 1. dedication of temples 2. special instruction to priesthood leaders 3. sustaining a new president of the church
- sustaining is a promise to give full support and loyalty
- the 1st three successions of the church were much longer than usual. We’re talking about years in between successions.

34
Q

Chapter 4

A

The New Testament Church organization is the pattern for the First Presidency today. Know the history of how and when the First Presidency was established and what authority members of the First Presidency have (p. 44). Understand the preeminence of the President of the Church. The First Presidency presides over the Church. Understand the importance and role of the counselors in the First Presidency. Be familiar with basic day-to-day activities/meetings of the First Presidency. (p. 49) Doctrinal interpretation is the right and responsibility of the First Presidency. What the First Presidency says is considered scripture (p. 53). They are a Supreme Court of sorts. We sustain the First Presidency by looking to the First Presidency for key instruction. Those who follow the First Presidency will not go astray.
First presidency was established in 1833 and Joseph was the prophet with Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G Williams as his counselors
1st presidency has the authority to interpret doctrine
the Prophet there said, ‘The Twelve are not subject to any other than the First Presidency … and where I am not, there is no First Presidency over the Twelve’
In other words were the President taken, the Counselors would have no authority. The Counselors do not possess the power of the President and cannot act in Church matters without direction and consent of the President
Meetings of the first presidency:
Tuesday through Friday @ 8am
discuss issues that need direct attention of first presidency (questions about standards, excommunications, lots and lots of stuff…)
Tuesdays @ 10am
Meet with expenditures meeting
Once a month on Wednesdays
meet with combined church board of education and board of trustees to deal with issues relating to universities, institutes, siminaries, etc
Thursdays @ 10am
join with the 12 in upper room of the temple.
First thursday of every month:
meet with general authorities (the 12, the 70, the presiding bishopric)
Friday @9am
meet with presiding bishopric

Q

Chapter 5

A

Apostles are part of the foundation of the Lord’s true Church. Leaders called to this Quorum are not “spectacular individually,” but collectively they are a power (p. 57) Remember first apostles of the Church were Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Quorum first organized in 1835. Apostles bear special witness that Jesus is the Christ. Apostles hold all the priesthood keys of the kingdom of God. Know the duties of the Twelve Apostles—these are listed in our chapter 5 reading. (D & C 107) Apostles build God’s kingdom throughout the earth. Apostles have the keys to open the preaching of the gospel to the nations. The decisions of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles are generally unanimous. Know what this means.
- apostles hold the priesthood keys, use under the direction of the Prophet and first presidency
Duties of an Apostle
officiate in the name of the Lord under the first Presidency
build up the church and regulate the affairs of the church
open new lands for the proclamation of the gospel of Christ
to ordain and set in order all other officers of the church
bring unity of the faith
bless the lives of who will learn
help people prepare for salvation/exaltation
special witness of Christ’s life
Sustained as prophets, seers, and revelators BUT under the direction of the first Presidency
- keys to open the nations through negotiations with govt officials and leaders, works within laws of each nation, dedicate and rededicate lands for preaching of the gospel
ALL decisions are and must be UNANIMOUS

Know the purposes of general conferences (see below). General conference provides opportunities for spiritual renewal. Know the key ways to prepare to participate in General Conference (pgs. 77-78 → see below). The words of the prophets delivered through the Spirit during general conference are latter-day scripture. We commit to heed and support those we sustain in general conference. Know in what ways is General conference a call to action? Applying the teachings of general conference will improve our lives and is the key to getting the greatest value.

Purposes of general conference from textbook:
To inform member of general conditions (progress of church, economic conditions, etc
commend true merit
express gratitude for divine guidance
give instruction in principles, doctrine, and in the law of the gospel
proclaim the restoration
to admonish and inspire to continue in greater activity
Key ways to prepare according to textbook:
