- phonation (0-2) - fussing crying sneezing
- cooing (2-3)
- vocal play (4-6) - squeals growls yells etc
- canonical babbling (7-10) - ma, da, ga, e, im, ada
- jargon or intoned babble (10-13) - long strings of syllables
