How should we respond to culture in a group?
None of us are going to know everything with every culture so we just need to remain respectful.

How does faith play a role in group counseling?
When you have a strong BELIEF and you work with someone who goes against that belief you must be self aware and non-judgmental.
Your FAITH is a part of who you are.
Tasks and Traits of members:
Capacity to examine interpersonal behaviors, self-disclose, and give and receive feedback.
Members must attend to the task and engage in the process.
Selection of group members:
DE-SELECT: It is really about who we WONT select.
Good group therapy starts with good participant selection.
Attendance
Good attendance is so necessary that it is wise to exclude members that do not attend regularly.
Drop Outs
Hurts the person and the group.

Homogeneity VS heterogeneity

Heterogeneous groups have advantages over homogeneous groups for long term, intensive, interactional group therapy.
Homogeneous groups has advantages for shared problems. They gel more quickly but aren’t necessarily great in the long term.
Group therapists strive for - Maximum heterogeneity in the clients conflict areas and patterns of coping, and at the same time strive for homogeneity of the clients degree of vulnerability and capacity to tolerate anxiety.
How is a group modeled?
The prototypical model is the intensive, heterogeneously composed outpatient psychotherapy group, meeting for at least several months, with the ambitious goals of both symptomatic relief and personality change. Page XIII

Verbal Intercourse is next to Sexual Intercourse. Once you grow verbally intimate you grow sexually intimate.

In the beginning - The first group meeting

We know that a first session of the group is invariably a success because people are usually excited to come. Usually no matter what happens they are happy to be there.
What are the 5 stages of group development?
Forming - The group coming together
Storming - Members start to have conflict with each other and at the group leader.
Norming - People renorm. After the conflict the come to the realization that they an actually get some stuff done in the group.
Performing - Getting to the task. They are ready to do deeper work.
Adjorning - End of the group. People tend to get sad towards the end when they realize it is over.
