Crop Lien System
A system in which a person would own their own farm but have to go to a merchant in town to buy their supplies and put up the crop as collateral. This was an economic trap in the South because you end up in debt. This is significant to the theme of sectionalism because the North was becoming more industrialized.
Republicans
The Republicans were the party in the North and they were split between moderates and radicals. The moderates wanted to get the Civil War over with so the economy would go back on track. The radicals wanted to re-distribute Southern land to ex-slaves. This is significant because the Republicans were a sectional party.
Bloody Kansas
Bloody Kansas was in 1854 and pro-slavery men passed the border and voted to make Kansas a slave-territory. However, the Northers say this is unfair and call for another election. Both sides oppose one another, and John Brown leads a pro-slavery raid that kills 5 men. This relates to the theme of sectionalism because Bloody Kansas polarized the North and South.
Exodusters
the exodusters were tens of thousands of African Americans who moved from the South to the West. They established a town in Kansas in 1877, but it did not last long because the railroads did not pass through their town. This is significant because it was a black society that emerged post-Civil War.
Reconstruction governments
The reconstruction government was after the Civil War and they focused on establishing school systems, building public roads, poor relief and equality before the law. Southerns disagreed with this and said they were being forced to live under the laws of blacks. This is significants because it furthers the growth of sectionalism between the North and South.
Trickster tales
These were stories from Africa about animals. They were small and meak animals who would outsmart their enemy. This is significant because it relates to the theme of slavery and how slaves created their own world and community outside of white control.
Fire eaters
The fire eaters were a Southern party that said the South must secede to survive. They were anti-north and put pressure on the Democrats. This relates to the theme of sectionalism because the North and South are separate parties.
