Final Exam 1 Flashcards
What are the building blocks of life?
Carbs, DNA, RNA, Proteins, Lipids (macromolecules)
What are the 6 elements that life is made of?
H, C, O, N, P, S
Where were amino acids found?
in meteorites
What are the three domains of life?
Bacteria, archaea, eukaryote
What are the two cell types?
prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Define prokaryote
no nucleus (bacteria and archaea)
Define eukaryotes
has nucleus and other internal compartments
What is the serial endosymbiosis theory?
the eukaryotes arose through the merger of multiple prokarkotes
What are the 5 kingdoms
animalia, plantae, fungi, protista, prokaryotae
When did life begin on earth (according to what)?
3.5 Billion years ago. based on the age of fossilized stromatolites
When did earth form?
4.5 billion years ago
Autotrophs:
Uses CO2 to make organics (all plants, some protista and bacteria. Uses sunlight (photo-) or chemical (chemo-) energy
Heterotrophs:
Have to eat organics (everything that is not an autotroph)
Mixotrophs
Can use CO2 to make organics or they can eat organics
Two forms of autrophy in the ocean
Chemosynthesis and photosynthesis
