Final Drive Part 3 Flashcards
What are the three types of axels?
- Semi-floating
- Three-quarter floating
- Full-floating
What are the three types of rear axel bearings and retainers?
- Straight roller type
- Tapered roller type
- Ball bearing type
What are the three functions of the semi-floating axel?
- Transmits torque
- Supports vehicle weight
- Retains the wheel
What are the two functions of the three-quarter floating axel?
- Transmits torque
- Retains the wheel
What is the function if the full-floating axel?
Transmits torque
What load does a ball axel bearing carry?
Carries radial and axial thrust loads
What load does a straight-roller axel bearing carry?
Carries only radial load
What load does a tapered-roller axel bearing carry?
Carries radial and axial load (in one direction only)
What is used to lock the axel to the differential side gear in a semi-floating axel retainer?
C-Clip
Why should you be careful not to use excess gasket sealer?
It can contaminate the parts
What is the function of the axel retaining plate?
It keeps the bearing/axel assembly in the axel housing
What is used to modify the friction to prevent clutch chatter on turns?
An LSD additive (for lubricant)
What are these: SAE 75W-90, 80W-90, 80W, GL-5
Differential lubricants
How is lubrication delivered to the final drive assembly
It relies on splash lubrication
Why should you pay attention to the OEM specified gaskets
Because the thickness may affect clearances in some equipment
How much form-in-place gaskets (sealer) should be used
Usually 1/8” bead or smaller
Which type of seals do not seal pressure?
Differential seals
What is most affected by vehicle modifications?
The final drive (may cause early final drive failure)
What is rear axel windup?
During acceleration, the pinion gear climbs the ring gear tilting the axel housing upwards. This can cause delay to acceleration on high performance vehicles.
What is used to correct rear axel windup?
Traction bars can be installed
What issue may occur due to a modified suspension?
Front pinion bearing may starve for lubrication
When would you replace the front u-joint by a double-cardan joint?
Why?
- When you have a modified suspension
- To reduce vibration
What are shims used for?
To tilt the rear axel in a leaf spring suspension
How do you compensate for a different rear axel ratio?
- One or more vehicle modules must be recalibrated
- On older vehicles. speedometer gear is replaced or an electronic module is installed to correct the speed reading
