Cultural Awareness
Emic perspective: Introspective cultural values and beliefs (looking from the inside out)
Etic perspective: Extrospective cultural values and beliefs (looking from the outside in)
Cultural Group
People with common origins, customs, and styles of living
A shared sense of anything, attitudes, behaviors
Ethnocentrism
Viewing one’s own cultural group as the center of everything, and is the standard against which other cultures are judged
Cultural Relativity
Behavior must be judged in relation to the context of the culture in which it occurs
Acculturation
The degree to which people from any cultural group display behavior which is like the more pervasive American (or whichever society) norms of behavior
Also called: Westernization or modernization
People with high levels of acculturation have high levels of formal education, born into a family in the US, amount of contact with people from their culture is low, early age, higher SES
Health Belief Model
Explanatory Model (Kleinman): a model to help physicians with their patient care
Guidelines for working with culturally diverse patients
Establish rapport to avoid stereotyping
Learn about the community - participant observation and key informants
Paradigm of practitioner - client relationship, group or dyadic
Institutional setting - specific location
Time coordinates - episodic or continuous, time spent each meeting, time spent communicating with each other

- Pay attention to format (master function)
- Make wise color choices (dark with light text)
