Kinship
Kinship - social bond based on common ancestry, marriage, or adoption.
Marriage - A legal relationship, usually involving economic cooperation, sexual activity, and childbearing.
Family - A social institution found in all societies that unites people in cooperative groups to care for one another, including any children.
Nuclear versus Extended Family
Nuclear Family - a family composed of one or two parents and their children. (AKA conjugal family)
Extended Family - a family composed of parents and children as well as other kin. (AKA consanguine family)
Endogamy versus Exogamy
Endogamy - marriage between people of the same social category.
Exogamy - marriage between people of different social categories.
Monogamy versus Polygamy
Monogamy - Marriage that unites two partners.
Polygamy - marriage that unites a person with two or more spouses.
- Polygyny - Marriage that unites one man and two or more women.
- Polyandry - Marriage that unites one woman and two or more men.
Residential Patterns
- patrilocality - live with husband’s family.
- matrilocality - live with wives family.
- neo-locality - live apart from both families.
Patterns of Descent
Descent refers to the system by which members of a society trace kinship over generations.
Patrilineal - tracing kinship through men.
Matrilineal - tracing kinship through women.
Bilateral - tracing kinship through both men and women.
