Final Flashcards
In a band, there are 3 basic musical functions:
‣melodic
‣harmonic
‣rhythmic.
Bass Guitar-
‣ Lower frequency bandwidth
‣ Harmonic Foundation
‣ Links Rhythm with Harmony and melody
Drummer-
‣Full spectrum bandwidth
‣Keeps the pulse
‣Protects the beat
‣Drives the song forward
Keyboardist-
‣Full spectrum frequency bandwidth
‣In the context of a worship band, the keyboardist often
must stay in the middle frequency bandwidth to
avoid playing over other musicians.
‣Plays chords and fills in melodic parts on occasion
‣Many keys players see themselves as only ‘piano’
players.
Electric Guitar-
‣Near full-spectrum frequency bandwidth ‣The ‘Maverick’ of the group ‣Percussive, melodic, harmonic ‣Rhythm- foundational chord structure ‣Lead- melodic ‣percussive- rhythmic texture
Acoustic Guitar-
‣Middle to upper-frequency bandwidth
‣Percussive, melodic or harmonic
‣Often follows the drummer’s kick, Snare and Hi-Hat.
Percussionist-
‣Rhythmic elements
‣Often complimenting the drummer
‣Adds extra elements of texture and complexity to
the sound
Sound Engineer-
‣Takes the raw sound of each band member and
further enhances their relationship in the frequency
spectrum.
‣You must be constantly working with your sound
engineer in order to ensure your equipment, tone,
and the proper role is being efficiently brought out for
the song.
‣A good sound engineer is your only link to how your
tone translates to the congregation.
‣The band is only as good as their sound operator.
