Q

Monism vs Theistic Dualism

A

Monism: body, soul, and spirit are all the same and when we die all that makes us human dies with us

Dualism: composed of a body and soul/spirit and when we die the soul/spirit side of us continues to live on. 2 Corinthians 5:8 proves this point

Theistic Monism vs Theistic Dualism

A

Theistic Monism: body and soul cannot exist apart from each other so when you die you “soul sleep”

Theistic Dualism: composed of a body and soul/spirit and when we die the soul/spirit side of us continues to live on. 2 Corinthians 5:8 proves this point

Q

Gnostic Dualism vs Theistic Dualism

A

Gnostic dualism: made up of a body and soul/spirit but the body is evil and the spirit/soul is good. Asceticism comes from this and is the punishment of the body for the benefit of the spirit (“people start to praise the punishing of the flesh rather than the overcoming of sin”). Hedonism also comes from this and is the belief that the body is bad so you can do whatever you want in your body and be okay because only the spirit matters

Theistic Dualism: composed of a body and soul/spirit and when we die the soul/spirit side of us continues to live on. 2 Corinthians 5:8 proves this point

Q

Discuss what 3 relationships were affected in the fall of man

A

God, others, and self. We were supposed to be in perfect fellowship with God, not to be so controlling and objectifying to others, and we were not supposed to be enslaved to our ego

Q

Explain “I/Thou” — “Exalted I/Ego” in view of the fall as discussed in class

A

The I/Thou relationship was supposed to be selfless and able to live in authentic selfhood. Instead, now because of the fall, we naturally want to relate to people in only selfish and egocentric ways. The fall made us reject the basic of relationship and to act in egocentric and selfish ways

Q

Give examples of how egoism is now the universal way humanity relates and interacts with their world

A

“People are not against you, they’re for themselves.” People will step on top of you to get what they want done, not that they don’t like you or that they don’t value what you have to say but because they are selfish and to advance their agenda above all else

Q

Explain how the church is institution

A

Institution: in the totality of it’s activities and agreements (created in the context of spirit & truth)

17
Q

Explain how the church is community

A

Community: in the totality of empowered personal relationships. We must be born into the community. (created in relationship w God & other saints)

18
Q

Explain how the church is influence

A

Influence: to outsiders, it’s the salt & light. By our changed life (created to be sent)

19
Q

Show what the character of the church allows

A

It allows us to outreach. We are different to be an invitation to those who are not apart of the church

20
Q

In terms of our mission, why are we called to be different (two reasons discussed in class)

A
  1. We are called to be witnesses to the world

2. We are called to be an invitation to the world

21
Q

Discuss the 3 boundaries of the church:

Enmity of the world

A

Hatred in the world toward the church. The offer of grace and conversion comes with too much sacrifice and too much is asked of people which creates resistance. Only by being separate can we reach. If we forsake that calling of otherness we forsake the ability to reach

22
Q

Discuss the 3 boundaries of the church:

Wisdom of the world

A

Lies of men. Pursuit of respectability. The church will look like fools to this world. Have to give up the idea that we will be loved by the world

23
Q

Discuss the 3 boundaries of the church:

Disobedience of the church

A

Compromise makes us lose our ability and power and when we withdraw we forsake our mission. Withdraw, if we are so separate that we isolate ourselves we will forsake our mission

24
Q

Forms of church government. Explain each:

Presbyterian

A

Presbyterian — board chooses
The Presbyterian model puts less emphasis on the bishop or leader and the church is run by ruling elders or a board. Does not line up with the single elder guided church in the Bible

25
Q

Forms of church government. Explain each:

Episcopal

A

Episcopal— individual chooses
One single person chooses for all of the churches and what will happen. This is a tyranny and is represented by the Roman Catholic Church and has leaders of leaders

26
Q

Forms of church government. Explain each:

Congregational

A

Congregational — congregation chooses
This model of the church is the one that we fine in the Bible. This model is the closest to
Pure democracy. The highest form of authority is not placed within the hands of one person or a board but rather it is in the entire body of believers. Acts 15 shows the Jerusalem council and it places the power on everyone

27
Q

Eschatology — where do the dead go?

OT

A

The righteous and unrighteous both when to Sheol (hell) but we’re in their respective compartments. The righteous were in Abraham’s bosom which was the comfort side and the unrighteous went to the place of torment which is where the flames are. Abraham’s bosom is also referred to as paradise by Jesus while on the cross

28
Q

Eschatology — where do the dead go?

Post- Resurrection

A

The comfort side of Sheol has been done away with because Jesus has brought them with Him into heaven. The righteous immediately go to be with the Lord in heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8) and the unrighteous go to hell.

29
Q

Eschatology — where do the dead go?

Eternity

A

The righteous will be reunited with their bodies after the rapture and before the second coming and will be with the Lord forevermore. The righteous eternal destination in the New Jerusalem on the new earth. The unrighteous will be brought out of hell to be reunited with their bodies, judged before the throne of Christ, and cast into the lake of fire for all eternity

30
Q

Who runs the church?

What does 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 mean for church government?

A

Women are allowed to speak in churches as long as they follow 1 Cor 11. The disobedient and unruly women are not allowed to speak in church because they are not subjecting themselves to authority. They just keep silent while they are learning because they are not in proper obedience.

31
Q

Who runs the church?

What does 1 Timothy 2:11-12 mean for church government

A

In this verse woman is singular and it is referring to a specific woman that is not in obedience or subjecting. Usurp means to take unlawful authority. If they are not in subjection and are not obedient then they should not try to take authority and should be silent. Once she is learn then she can teach

32
Q

Who runs the church?

What does Romans 16:1, 7; Romans 16; 2 John 1; mean for church government?

A

Romans 16:1;7,2: Deacon and apostles are applied to women. 25% of the leadership here is women. This shows that obedient women can be apart of the 5 fold ministry

2 John 1 written to a female pastor. Every salutation of every epistle in the Bible is written to the leadership of the church so that means that the leadership of the church here in 2 John would be a woman. The last verse shows that a different woman pastor is greeting the church of 2 John

33
Q

What does “husband of one wife” (1 Tim 3:2) mean for church government?

A

Fidelity in marriage. Faithfulness to spouse. Not just men, but women as well. This means that it doesn’t have to be a man, but the man is spoken of as a collective group of people.

34
Q

What does it mean to “usurp authority” in 1 Timothy 2:12?

A

To usurp authority means to take it unlawfully. If you have not been obedient and followed what is required then you are unlawfully taking authority that you have not worked for

35
Q

How is christology soteriology?

A

If you miss the perfect man in covenant then you won’t be able to identify with Him in salvation. Who Christ is is only known in what He does. Identifying with the suffering servant we understand that it was through His obedient sacrifice that we can gain salvation. We follow His example in who He is through repentance, baptism, and speaking in tongues

36
Q

How is christology pneumatology?

A

If you miss the perfect man in covenant you will miss what life in the spirit is supposed to be. Christ is the true potential of what every human can be and when we identify with His human nature we understand that we have access to the Spirit. Christ is the first of many and we follow after what He has done

37
Q

How is christology eschatology?

A

If you miss the man in covenant then you will miss your end goal. Christ was the one who reached for us and now He does it in us. When we get the person and work of Christ right that gives us access to eternity and keeps us until the end.
