Final Flashcards
Know which sprinkler systems are open type
Deluge “A deluge system does not have closed heads that open individually…” pg. 981
“Unlike standard response or fast response sprinklers, open fire sprinklers have no thermal element and the nozzles are completely open. Deluge fire sprinkler systems are open fire sprinklers that utilize a fire alarm initiating device to detect heat. The initiating device or devices send a signal to the fire alarm panel which then activates the deluge valve. Then the water flows out of every fire sprinkler nozzle. These types of fire sprinklers are used in high hazard occupancies where there’s a lot of combustible material. When large amounts of these combustibles catch on fire, they produce a lot of heat and these fires can spread quickly. Industrial and manufacturing type facilities utilize open fire sprinkler systems since these facilities contain large amounts of combustible material.” https://kinetixfire.com/the-difference-between-various-types-of-fire-sprinklers/
How to stabilize a vehicle on its wheels
“Vehicles that end up on their wheels need to be stabilized with wheel chocks to prevent vehicles from rolling. Vehicles must also be stabilized vertically with cribbing.” - pg. 897
Which method of foam application is the most effective a large petroleum tank fire
Rain-down - pg. 877
Know what the division of labor is
“Division of labor is a way of organizing an incident by breaking down the overall strategy into a series of smaller tasks. Some fire departments are divided into unites based on function. For example, engine companies establish water supplies and pump water; truck companies perform forcible entry, rescue, and ventilation functions.” - pg. 20
A tank with an LPG label on it would contain
Liquefied petroleum gas - pg. 60
What kind of glass breaks into small pieces
Tempered glass - pg. 196
What kind of hearing device allow the hearing or speech impaired to communicate via telephone
“Speech and/or hearing impaired citizens can communicate by telephone using special relay devices that display text rather than transmitting audio. These include the TTY (teletype), the TDD (telecommunications device for the deaf), and text devices.” - pg 138
What is the psi to test fire hose
NFPA 1962 - Standard for the Care, Use, Inspection, Service Testing, and Replacement of Fire Hose, Couplings, Nozzles, and Fire Hose Appliances - pg.879
“Attack fire hose shall be service tested to a minimum of 300 pounds per square inch (psi).
Supply fire hose shall be service tested to a minimum of 200 psi.”

How long should the pressure be maintained during hose testing
5 minutes - pg. 881
Know who establishes minimum standards specifically for ff
National Fire Protection Association
“The training and performance qualifications for fire fighters are specified in NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.” - pg. 6
Know what hose testing involves in general
Pg. 881
Know roof types
Flat roofs, pitched roofs, curved roofs - pg. 500-501
Know about air bags
“Air bags can be found in many locations in modern vehicles–even within the seats of the vehicle. Their locations can be identified by markings consisting of acronyms, such as “SRS” (supplemental restraint system), “SIR” (supplemental inflatable restraint), “HPS” (head protection system), “SIPS” (side-impact protection system), and “AIR BAG.” These markings are generally located in proximity to the inflator and may be embossed, raised or sewn into the plastic, cloth or leather material.” Pg 889
Know what a riser that supplies a sprinkler system
A pipe connected to a sprinkler system - bridge between external plumbing/municipal water source and internal plumbing/sprinkler piping. - pg. 971, figure 26-23
Know which uniform data collection system is used by most departments to track incident information
“In the United States, the National Fire Incident Reporting System is used to compile and analyse incident reports at the local, state and national levels.” - pg. 847
What does unified command mean
“In this approach, representatives from each agency cooperate to share command authority. They work toegher and are directly involved in the decision-making process. Operating under a unified command helps to ensure cooperation, avoid connfusion, and guarantee agreement…” - pg. 821-822
What kind of sprinkler system should be used in a building where piping may be subjected to freezing temperatures
“Dry pipe systems are used in facilities that may experience below-freezing temperatures” - pg. 980
What is the proper clothing for a fire attack on a liquid propane gas cylinder
“Because an explosion can happen at any time, ff should wear full PPE and SCBA at this type of incident” - pg. 865
What is a “bight”
The open loop in a rope or piece of webbing formed when it is doubled back on itself
What height are wildland fuels considered “aerial?”
6 ft, also called canopy fuels
Sub-surface = under the ground = roots, moss, duff
Surface fuels = ground level = logs, branches, bark, leaves, twigs, needles up to 6 ft
Aerial = 6 ft or more above the ground = trees, limbs
Not wearing your PPE can lead to what?
Serious injury and death of not only yourself, but also puts other firefighters at risk if they have to rescue you
What is the temperature at which liquid fuel produces sufficient vapors to support combustion:
Fire point (flame point) Combustible liquids have a flashpoint at or above 37.8°C (100°F) and below 93.3°C (200°F)
Boiling point – i.e. water at 212 – will be the lowest ignition point of any compound in the mixture Flash point – lowest temp at which liquid or solid produces flammable vapor Fire point (flame point) – lowest temp liquid produces enough vapors to sustain continuous fire
What sprinkler system is used if there is an issue of freezing?
Dry Pipe
What type of glass is commonly used in side windows in a vehicle:
Tempered Glass
What is the recommended minimum pressure for water coming from a fire hydrant:
20 PSI
Know about drafting hydrant also known as dry hydrants:
Areas not served by public water systems can be equipped with drafting hydrants to provide a reliable water supply. When farther distances are involved, a pumper can draft from a hydrant to fill tankers that will shuttle water to the scene. Found in lakes and rivers
Engine must be within 20 feet to draft, uses a hard suction hose
Know about life safety ropes per NFPA 1983:
Rope dedicated solely for the purpose of supporting people during rescue, firefighting, other emergency operations or during training evolutions. Can either be a technical use life safety rope or a general use life safety rope.
Technical use – 3/8 inch or greater diameter, but less than ½ inch
Minimum breaking strength of 4496 lbf
Used in TRT or wilderness environments
General use – 7/16 inch to 5/8 inch
Minimum breaking strength of 8992 lbf
More common, greater margin of safety
Convection is
The transfer of heat by flow of gas or fluid from hotter areas to cooler areas
Know the advantage of the horseshoe load
It contains fewer sharp bends than other hose loads, can be used in a split bed configuration, and load can be started from either side of bed.
Know the body area most vulnerable to injury when exposed to the products of combustion
Respiratory tract
Where will firefighters usually find sliding doors:
Residences or hotel rooms that open onto balconies or patios
Know what LUNAR stands for
Know what LUNAR stands for
Location, Unit, Name, Air/Assignment, Resources needed
Know the method by which tankers unload water:
The most efficient method of unloading tankers is to dump the water into portable tanks through Gravity Dump or Jet Dump. Also called Dump valve.
Advantage of a flat load:
Easiest to load for LDH and smaller hose, best load for LDH. Easiest to load, can be used on any size hose, lays flat without twists or kinks, less wear and tear on edges of hose.
