Line
is the extension of a point, either straight or curved.
Shape
is a flat plane having length and height
Form
is a shape or object with dimension of depth. It may be the actual mas of a sculpture, or building, or the suggested mass on a two-dimensional surface in a drawing or painting.
Texture
Is the identifying surface quality of a substance. this can either be tactile or visual.
Color or hue
Is the light quality which distinguishes a color by name.
Value
Is the range of lightness or darkness within a picture.
Space
Is the three-dimensionality of sculpture. Space in a two-dimensional drawing or painting refers to the arrangements of objects on the picture plane. These objects can be cluttered or bare on th paper or canvas. The illusion of depth can be achieved by using perspective.
Rhythm Movement
Controls the way the viewer looks at a work of art and where his/her eyes are led
Variety
is concerned with the inclusion of differences in the elements of a composition to offset unity and add interest to an artwork.
Balance
is the equal arrangement of visual elements in a work of art. We looked at examples of asymmetrical, Radial, and symmetrical balance.
Emphasis
is an area in a work of art which is stressed to attract the viewer’s attention.
Pattern
The repetition of elements or combination to create a recognizable organization.
Unity
A sense of oneness or wholeness in a work of art; allows the viewer to see a combination of elements and principles as a whole.
Contrast/Proportion
is concerned with the size relationship of one part to the whole and one part to another part. Contrast can be employed in colors.
Closure
When your eye completes an unclosed path or image.
Proximity
When elements are placed close together, they tend to be perceived as a group.
Similarity
Things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together.
Figure/Ground Relationship
The eye differentiates an object from its surrounding area. A form, silhouette, or shape is naturally perceived as figure (object), while the surrounding area is perceived as ground (background).
