A way to achieve disposition without going through a trial where the defendant believes the jury will convict, so pleads guilty without admission of guilt.

Allows a defendant to fix the problem (usually via restitution or counselling, or something that gives assurance the problem will not arise again), which then leads to a dismissal of the case for minor charges.
