2
Q

Bernoulli effect (how it relates to singing)

A

causes the sucking together of vocal folds; air in motion has less density or pressure than when immobile, causing a suction effect; constantly maintained airflow will increase speed at a constricted site, thus producing a decrease in pressure at that point (think lip buzzing)

Q

What are the three functions of the larynx?

A
  1. to block food from touching your vocal folds
  2. to hold back air for thoracic fixation; occurs when lifting something
  3. produce vocal tone

16
Q

What is the function of the epiglottis?

A

to allow air to escape the larynx, but to block food from entering the larynx

17
Q

ventricle

A

small cavity or pouch

18
Q

epithelium

A

the outer layer of your vocal fold

19
Q

vocalis muscle

A

the muscle in your vocal folds

20
Q

Intrinsic Laryngeal muscles fall into four categories. What are they?

A

abductors
adductors
tensors
relaxors

21
Q

What happens when the cricothyroid muscle contracts?

A

the cricoid moves down and lengthens your vocal folds more, allowing the person to sing with their head voice

22
Q

Extrinsic laryngeal muscles are sometimes called, as a group the ____________.

A

strap muscles

23
Q

To which two cartilages does the cricothyroid muscle attach?

A

the cricoid cartilage and the thyroid cartilage

24
Q

What are the three basic types of phonation? (briefly explain each)

A

aspirate - breathy, lax
pressed - thin, tight
coordinated - balanced between the two to produce clear tone

25
Q

List the eight characteristics of efficient vocal tone.

A
  1. a unique vocal quality that seems natural
  2. Tonal clarity and accuracy
  3. relaxation of laryngeal muscles; produces vocal tone without stressing
  4. Vocal elasticity which allows the singer to move quickly
  5. Timbre which has both light and dark qualities (chiascurro)
  6. Coordinated phonation
  7. Produce vocal tone well in a range of volumes
  8. Vibrato pulse of 6-8 per second
26
Q

How many liters of air can the lungs of an average adult male hold?

A

5-7

27
Q

Explain the difference between ligaments and tendons.

A

Ligaments connect bones to other bones.

Tendons connect bone to muscle.
