Class dominance theory
Argument that small elite/upper class dominate and influence societal institutions; compatible with conflict theory
Coercion
The threat/use of physical force in order to ensure compliance
Legitimate authority
Power that is recognized as rightful by those over whom it is exercised
Traditional authority
Power based on a belief in the sanctity of long standing traditions and the legitimate right of rulers to exercise authority in accordance to those traditions (can’t get over the past)
Rational law authority
Power based on a belief in the lawfulness of enacted laws and the legitimate right of leaders to exercise authority under such rules
Authoritarianism
Form of govt where ordinary people are denied the right to participate in govt while the political power is controlled by the elite
Politics
Art or science of influencing public policy
Representative democracy
Political system where citizens elect representatives to govern them
Direct democracy
All citizens participate in govt
PACs (Political Action Commitees)
Organizations created by interest groups in order to raise money to fund political candidates who favor them
Reserve army of labor
Pool of job seekers whose numbers outpace the available positions & contribute to keeping wages low and conditions of work tenuous

Practice that sought to use principals of engineering to reduce the physical movement of workers
Automation
Replacement of human labor by machines in the process of manufacturing
Unemployed
People who are jobless and actively looked for work in the prior four weeks and are available to work
Not In the labor force
When people are neither employed or OFFICALLY unemployed
Marginally attached to the labor forces
People who would like to work and searched for a job for the past 12 months
