Repetition

Using a word that suggests two or more meanings

A question posed without needing an answer, but used to make a point.
Tautology
Repetitive words which have similar meanings (completely devoid / repeat that again)
Understatement
Presentation of something as being smaller or less important than it actually is.
Sarcasm
Literal meaning is different than what the speaker intends to say; to speak bitterly.
Personification
A thing, idea, or animal is given human attributes (the sky weeps / it is a beauty)
Denotation
Literal meaning in contrast to its connotative or associated meaning (dove = peace)
Connotation
A meaning that is implied by a word apart from the thing it describes (Wall Street = wealth)
Allusion
A brief reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance.
Alliteration
Several words that have the same first consonant sound (a big bully beats a baby boy)
Euphemism
Polite or indirect expressions that replace harsh or impolite words or phrases.
Onomatopoeia
Word which imitates the natural sounds of a thing (buzzing bee / rustling leaves)
Oxymoron
Two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect (tragic comedy / awfully pretty)
Hyperbole
Exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis (old as dirt / heavy as an elephant)
Imagery
To present objects, actions, and ideas on such a way that it appeals to our physical senses (dark/dim, whiff/aroma)
Foreshadowing
Writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.
Irony
When words are used in a way that their intended meaning is different than their actual meaning
Legend
A traditional story regarded as historical but unauthenticated.
Parable
A short story with a moral lesson at the end
Satire
To expose and criticize foolishness and corruption by using humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule.
Simile
To show similarities between two different things (uses like or as)
Metaphor
Compare two things that are different but share some characteristics.
Allegory
Abstract ideas and principles are described in terms of characters, figures, or events ( animal farm )
Biography
Gives background on a character
Chronological
A sequence of events that start with the earliest and goes to completion
Climax
High point of a story
Conflict
A struggle between two opposing forces.
