Context of 1 John
Written to the churches of Asia from Ephesus (the mother church of Asia
- Ephesus was the trading center of Asia and its largest, most important city
- In Asia, Ephesus was the center of:
1. Gnostic teaching
2. Idolatry –the emperor is requiring worship for him
The letters to the seven local churches of Asia provide insight into the struggles and spiritual state of John’s audience
Spiritual State of 1 John
- having a deep love relationship with Christ is what makes you the church
- hot or cold has to do with how you are an effective witness to your culture
Circumstances of 1 John
- the need for renewed love in the churches
- if the church is going to have a vibrant love with Christ then they should have a vibrant love for one another. You cannot have one without the other.
- to encourage the churches in the rejection of the Gnostics
- to further counteract Gnostic teaching
1 John 1
. Progressive encounter with Jesus (1:1)
Four actions that apostles do in regard to Jesus
1. start by hearing him
2. they have seen with their eyes (seen: typical verb for see)
3. what they have looked at (looked at: means really to analyze or stare at)
4. what we have touched with our hands
These apostles have had a progressive encounter with Jesus. Which sets up how our relationship with Christ should be- going deeper and deeper and deeper
This is highly anti-gnostic. Gnostics wanted to go deeper and deeper in their enlightenment with Christ but John is describing the need to go deeper in a love relationship.
