Q

Describe key differences between dialogue and debate, and give examples of when each is more effective.

A

Dialogue – listening to an opposing side and seeing it as perspective rather than wrong or contradictory, talking to share insight and additional perspective, seeing multiple perspectives, working towards a common purpose
Debate – trying to win an argument; assumes one side is right and one is wrong; picks at the critical issues of the “opposing” view and finds fault
Examples could include working to solve a problem or change a social issue (dialogue) vs. wanting to win an argument or prove a point (debate)
