A

1954ish. Group of people who fought the Japanese in WWII and continued to fight the French afterwards because they wanted independence. French don’t make headway, war becomes unpopular and French evacuate in 1954.

A

Feb-Nov 1917. Faced with dealing with Russia role in war, the lack of food, and warmth, peasants revolting for land back. Unseats the zar, tries to set up electoral voting, they don’t get out of the war or surrender to the Germans.

1850-1864. Starts with a crazy guy who was trying to be a Confucius bureaucrat but fails his exams multiple times. Wants to end Manchu Qing dynasty. He gets a quarter of the population to join. The government goes to the British for help.

  1. Most favored nation status, residence rights in 5 treaty parts- Hong Kong, Law tariffs, extraterritoriality, Indemnities’. British got whatever China trades with anyone else. This is a result of the Opium Wars.

  1. U.S. equip discontent Guatemalan generals to invade Guatemala because Arbenz is labeled communist. They do it to release terror of the population of Guatemala so they will not stand in way of overthrowing a “communist” government.

  1. U.S. had missiles in Turkey pointed at Russia. Russia took missiles to Cuba and pointed them at U.S.. U.S. blocks Cuba to prevent missiles from coming in. Meet with United Nations. Neither wants to back down and knows the public won’t be happy if they do.

1870’s-1910. Named for Diaz, who is president for 32 years. Modernize Mexico as quickly as possible. Early 1900’s oil industry. Mexico doesn’t really benefit- kicked off land, higher food prices, work for low prices. Foreign investors benefit hugely from Mexico.

  1. American that sails to Japan because he wants to trade with them. Japan sends Summo wrestlers to greet them in hopes of scaring them off. He leaves and says that they have one year to trade or they’ll fire. Establish a treat of Kanagawa, which ends Japans Isolation.

Opium War

A

1839-1842. European countries were selling highly addictive drug- Opium- to the Chinese. Chinese made it illegal but officials turned blind eye because they were bribed. A series of wars between Europe and China broke out over the Opium.

A

1870s. Japan is restoring the emperor to be head of government again. All military forces are loyal to the emperor, Nationalism. Modernization- embrace new technology. State supported industrial modernization. Education for everyone, no matter their class. Beginning of Japanese expansion.

1910s-1940s. Believed in not engaging in violence ever. Ahinsa-nonharm. He believed in peaceful protests. He used civil disobedience- publically violate unjust laws then go peacefully when arrested and make that well known.

  1. Germany plans to flood into Russia quickly and blindside them and force them to surrender, but it doesn’t work. Stalingrad occurs in 1942 in the city and is house to house fighting. Germany gets trapped and Hitler won’t let them withdraw, causing them to lose

Stalin and Hitler agree that they will not fight each other; they divide Poland. In 1939, Russia is buying off Germany because they’re too powerful.

1941-1942. Set of agreements between GB and US. US and UK do not seek territorial gains. Territorial changes must accord with the wishes of those involved. Self determination. Free trade and freedom of the sea. Global and economic collaborations improved social welfare. Freedom from want and fear. Disarmament of nations.

June and July 1945. Truman’s very brash which doesn’t mix with Stalin. Atlee now represents GB. Doesn’t get along with Stalin either. Stalin feels very threatened because US and GB representatives are both new so former agreements are up in air. Stalin feels threatened because Truman tells him about atomic bomb. Truman and Atlee both disagree with spheres of influence

1890’s. Plan for fighting a two front war and winning. First devote majority of armed forces to defeating France in four weeks then by the time Russia is all put together devote army to defeating them. Plan follows strict timeline.

  1. War between France and German states. War breaks out in 1871, and ends in 1871. Lasts four weeks because Germany had much better military. Germany gets piece of France and make them pay for the war. Germany declares its unity.
