Final Flashcards
Overgeneralization
Applying the rules that apply to other nouns or verbs to others
Example saying “bringed”
Overgeneralizing grammatical rules
Overextension
Using dog to refer to horse
Underextension
Only using dog to refer to Dalmatians but no other type of dogs
Gavagai problem
Problem of reference
It is not totally clear from the speech stream what the words coming out of the persons mouth correspond to the world around them
Hear the word gavagai, see a rabbit and it might mean that but could be something else around them
Cultural mismatch
Differences in language when you transition to school that you might not be exposed to at home
For example known answers
Define language
Systematic and conventional use of symbols (spoken, signed, or written) to express thoughts and ideas
Why study language?
Basic science and applied science
Basic science
Studying language and its development can help us understand how the human mind works
Applied science
Studying language and its development can help children who have, or are at risk for, language delays or impairments
Behaviorism
Every behavior can be explained by stimulus-response
Why is behaviorism no longer an accepted view?
Skinner argued that children learned language through operant conditioning
Children are rewarded (positive feedback) for correct utterances and receive negative feedback for incorrect utterances
How did Chomsky explain language development?
Chomsky argued that human languages have an underlying mental grammar
Linguistic should focus on this, rather than simply describing each language
