• What is a Dietetic Practice Group?
o Groups formed when members need an opportunity to network with each other - grows out of a concern of similar interest.
o Dues: $25-35/year
o Eligibility: Must be AND member

• Know which organization certifies dietitians.
o CDR (commission on dietetic registration)
• Know the important ideas when writing a resume and going on an interview (for example: do’s & don’ts)
o Don’ts • Don’t Be Late or Unprepared • Don’t Dominate or Ramble • Don’t Argue or Interrupt • Don’t Discuss Personal Issues • Don’t Use Diluted or Unprofessional Language • Don’t Bring the Kitchen Sink • Don’t Under or Over Sell Yourself • Don’t Initiate Salary Discussion o Do’s • Conservative suit or dress to industry • No short skirts • Hose and conservative shoes (closed toe heels) • Jewelry in moderation • Neat hair • Manicure • No Perfume • Shoes shined • Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early • Communicate effectively • Mirror Interviewer • Be Enthusiastic and Interesting • Be Honest • Smile • Relax - Deep Breathing • Be courteous to everyone (receptionist) • Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake • Maintain eye contact • Prepare for individual or group interviews • Be flexible and respectful • Pace yourself & listen • Clarify and ask questions when needed • Show interest • Thank them for the opportunity • Ask what the next step will be • Ask for the job • Negotiate after the offer
• Know what information to emphasize & downplay in an interview/letter of application
o Emphasize strengths, downplay weaknesses
• Know the etiquette of salary negotiation (briefly)
o Steps:
• Receive offer
• Evaluate offer
• Negotiate offer
o Do it to get the fair market value for your skills, experience and knowledge
o Don’t be over zealous, demanding
o Do your homework to research what the market will pay
o “Always” negotiate!
o Accept it, reject it or ask for something else
o Benefits, vacation, moving costs, etc.
o You can always think about an offer and get back to them – you don’t have to accept it on the spot!
o Sometimes you will go back and forth several times until a decision has been made
o The process does not need to be adversarial – in most cases it is expected!
o Start small and get comfortable with the process each time you interview
o If you don’t bring your personal salary higher, then don’t expect ADA to do it for you

• Don’t make it negative, do make it memorable

• What are your strengths and weaknesses
• What are your short and long term goals
• What experience do you have that prepares you for the dietetics field

• Food/nutrition/dietetics exp. valuable
• Paid vs volunteer
• Variety of experiences are also good
• Hospital experience is always beneficial to you and the program

o GPA
• The higher the GPA the better, but 4.0 is NOT necessary!!
• Grades often used as a screening tool
• Often sciences and professional courses (NFS) are scored separately
• If sciences are low, look for programs that are not primarily clinical such as a smaller med ctr. or community-based program
• Know what professional/student organizations a dietetic student can be a member of

• Know some general tips & advice about preparing to apply for an internship (with respect to GPA, last semester course load, internship focus, etc)
o 4.0 is not required, but the higher the better o Re-take classes if needed to raise GPA o Don’t overload your schedule o Choose a smaller or community based program if sciences are low o Order transcripts now o Take the GRE o Get experience now. • Know the parts of an internship application packet
o Application form o Recommendation forms (usually 3) o Personal Statement o Verification statement/ Intent to complete o Some programs have supplemental requirements o Some programs require GRE scores o Transcripts from all colleges attended o Resume
o RD is registered dietitian
controlled nationally by CDR
• Undergraduate degree in Dietetics or DPD requirements met (if you already have a Bachelor’s degree)
• Who is your DPD Director?
• Completion of a supervised practice component (DI or CP)
• Pass the national board exam – the RD exam
• Pay your credentialing dues – right now is $50/year
• Keep up with your continuing education
• Professional Development Portfolio
• 75 hours of CE every 5 years
o LD is licensed dietitian
controlled by the state, decides what you can do legally in each state
• A title defined by state law. People holding the credential must have the proper background established by the title.
• LD in Texas:
• Bachelor’s degree in nutrition/dietetics
• Supervised practicum approved by the State Board (set up by you)
• Pass the RD exam given by CDR
• OR
• Become a Registered Dietitian then apply for licensure in the state where you live!
• How much? $90 every two years in Texas
• Helps assure we have a dietetics profession
• Helps to assure we are the nutrition experts in our state
• Helps to protect the public from uneducated/untrained individuals
• Helps our clients/patients get insurance reimbursement
• Helps support each other where licensure is required
• Helps legislatively to support issues – “3,000 licensed dietitians in Texas agree with this bill”
• If we are not licensed in Texas, someone else will be
• Know what types of internships exist. Hint- internship only, combined, etc

o Matched applicants must phone, fax, or email the DI program before 5:00 pm in the programs time zone in order to accept match
