Denial

A

defense mechanism by which people avoid the implications of an illness. It is common reaction to chronic illness. Patients act like the illness is not severe, as if it will go away, or it will have few long term implications. BUT denial can sometimes be a blessing because it can serve as a protective function by keeping the patient from having to come to terms with the full range of problems

-CHD accounts for 33% of the deaths that occur to people before the age of 77
-caused by atherosclerosis aka narrowing of the coronary arteries caused by plaque
-risk factors include: high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, and low activity levels
-extensive research links chronic stress to CHD
-seen in men but kills more women
-

70% of sudden deaths from heart attacks occur in the home

families are trained in CPR to restart the heart if this happens

20
Q

Stroke

A
  • 3rd leading cause of death

24
Q

Natural Killer Cells

A

  • neutrophils and macrophages which are both phagocytic cells that engulf target pathogens
  • limit the early stages of viral infections
25
Q

T-Lymphocytes

A
  • cell mediated immunity
  • released from the thymus gland
  • respond to specific antigens and kill by producing toxic substances
  • Helper T cells help by producing lymphokines which suppress immune function
26
Q

Immune Functioning

A
  • Stress can adversely affect the immune system
  • more stress = suppressed immune function as seen in wound healing
  • flight or flight responses are intense short term stressors enact our immune system. When we are constantly in the flight or flight response, we suppress the functioning of the immune system
  • increases natural killer cell activation, HPA activation leads to the death of white blood cells
27
Q

HIV

A
  • mainly affects gay, african american men
  • causes supression of the immune system to the point where you can no longer fight of infections
  • leads to AIDS, untreated HIV infection
28
Q

HIV testing and treatment

A
29
Q

Cancer

A

-2nd leading cause of death
