Q

What is Paul’s reason for writing Colossians?

A

The people at Colossae believed the message of Christ, but treated it as just one of many beliefs. Paul writes to clarify that Christ is the one who created the world, sustains the world, and came to save the world. Christ is NOT one of many. He is the centerpiece of God’s revelation.

A

1 Timothy 2:12 (over women leading in the church)

17
Q

Know the context situation of 1 Timothy 2:12

A

At the time, the church was full of false teachings. Since the women weren’t yet very familiar with the true message of Christianity, they wre spreading false teachings and leading people away from faith. This is why Paul TEMPORARILY said that women were not allowed to speak. Paul uses the example of Adam & Eve. Eve gets deceived by the false message of the serpant. Eve’s sin then affected Adam.

A

Warnings again false teachings

19
Q

What was the last letter written by Paul?

A

20

What is Paul’s purpose for writing 2 Timothy?

A

2 Timothy is the last letter written by Paul. He asks Timothy to come see him soon because he wants to see him one more time before he dies. Paul wants to invest in Timothy because he is young and will be a new leader in the faith. Paul tells him to fight the good fight of faith and not let fear stop him. In the final chapter of Paul’s writing, Paul writes that he has finished the race and kept the faith and encourages Timothy to do the same.

21
Q

Why is it widely believed that the gospels were written before 70 AD?

A

The reason for this belief is that none of them mention the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, a major event that would have actually supported their message because of the prophesy in Daniel 9 that the temple would be destroyed after the coming of the messiah.

22
Q

What are 2 common claims against the truth of the gospels and arguments against these claims?

A

One thing many people claim is a problem in the gospels is when they are not in agreement on certain details. The truth, however, is that this supports the claims of the gospels. In any court case today, if multiple witnesses came in and told the exact same story using the exact same details, their claims would be thrown out and considered unauthentic because they likely made up the story together beforehand. Eyewitness testimonies should be expected to contain differences. Differences don’t always mean that one is right and the other is wrong though. All it shows is different points of view.

Another claim against the truth of the gospels is that the stories were exaggerated little by little over time before they were written down. The problem with this is that this story was very important to the writers. It was so important to them that they gave their life for it. Therefore, wouldn’t they have made sure to write down the story correctly?! Also, if they did remember a few details incorrectly, others could have corrected them about it. Finally, 30-40 years is a very short time, too short for any exaggeration to have changed the story so much.

23
Q

Who was John?

A

He was originally a fisherman; he was the youngest of Jesus’ disciples, he spent a lot of time with Jesus and was profoundly changed as a result. 24
Q

What is John’s central theme in his gospel?

A

communicating that Jesus is the son of God

25
Q

How does John show that Jesus was the son of God?

A

He writes about 7 miracles Jesus did and 7 times when he called himself “I Am”

26
Q

What is one thing that makes the gospel of John unique?
