A device which is designed to prevent an excess in current flow in order to protect the wiring.
What are switches?
Any device which controls the current flow for one or multiple circuits.
What is a resistor?
A device which provides opposition to current flow to dissipate power in the form of heat.
What is a motor?
A device which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy
What is a power source?
Any device which created a voltage to be used to produce electron flow
What is a conductor?
A conductor carried the current from the power source to the place where it is used and carries the current back to the source
What is a load?
Any device which uses the electricity.
What is a terminal?
Metal ends attached to electrical wiring used for making connections to other components.
What is a post?
A device used to attach the terminal.
What is a terminal strip?
A device used for multiple terminals. It is used to produce a common point of disconnection for many components.
What is a bus?
A special terminal strip that receives the voltage from the main source and distributes it to the different loads.
What is a junction box?
A device used to hold multiple terminal strips.
What is a connector?
A mechanical connection for a conductor.
What is conduit?
An extra covering for a conductor for mechanical protection of the conductor.
What is load analysis?
The process of comparing the load of a system to the alternator generator output capabilities, and the wiring and circuit protection capabilities.
What is the purpose of load analysis?
To ensure except for short periods of time, that the battery is always being charged and the wiring is not overloaded.
What are the most common problems in an electrical circuit?
Open circuit
Short circuit
Low system voltage
Are all circuits required to have some form of circuit protection?
No.
When must a load analysis be performed?
Whenever a new piece of equipment is added to an electrical system or anything is done which may increase the load on a portion of a circuit.
What does the green indication light mean?
Safe operation.
What are the three standard colors for indication lights?
Red, amber, green.
What does the amber indication light mean?
Caution
What does the red indication light mean?
Unsafe condition, immediate action needs to be taken.
What is the only circuit that is both pre bus and post bus?
The starter circuit.
What is corona?
The discharge of electricity from the wire when it has a high potential.
What is the purpose of load analysis?
To ensure, except for short periods of time that the battery is always being charged and the wiring is not overloaded.
What are four precautions which must be kept on mind when using an ohmmeter?
If checking resistance in a component, that component must be isolated from the rest of the system.
Make sure the meter is put in parallel with the component
Chose proper function
Choose proper range
What are the symptoms of an open circuit? What instrument would you use to troubleshoot it?
The component will not operate.
Voltmeter.
Name and describe all the five steps of troubleshooting.
Gather all symptom info from the customer.
Confirm problem exists as described, when practical.
Study, understand proper operation of the system ( make a simple sketch of only the electrical circuit you are dealing with)
Make a list of all probable causes
Work through list from simplest to cheapest to most complex/expensive
What are the symptoms of a short circuit? What instrument would you use to troubleshoot it?
Blown circuit breaker, or wrong component operating.
Ohmmeter.
What are the four precautions that must be kept in mind when using an ammeter?
An ammeter is used with the system operating, so be careful.
Make sure the meter is put in series with portion of circuit
Observe polarity
Choose proper function / range
What are the four precautions that must be kept in mind when using a voltmeter?
A voltmeter is used with the component in the system with the system operating, so be careful.
Choose proper function and proper range.
Ensure the meter is placed in parallel with the system or component
Observe polarity.
What does the shielding in coaxial act as?
A ground or return path.
Name the numbering system used for electrical wire.
American wire gauge system
What are the two types of wire?
Solid and stranded
Describe the numbering system used for aircraft electrical wire.
Larger number represent physically smaller wires and gauges sizes are based on the cross sectional area of the wire.
What is the maximum number of terminals that can be attached to a terminal post?
4
After determining the proper copper wire size, what size aluminum wire should be used for the same application?
A wire that is two sizes larger.
What two things are major considerations when choosing the proper wire size for a particular installation?
Allowable voltage drop
The amount of current a wire is capable of carrying safely
What is the minimum bend radius for coaxial cable?
6, coaxial.
10x, standard wire bundle.
Describe the construction of a typical shielded cable.
Aluminum or copper wire core
Insulation
Another metal on the outside of that with a lesser ability for current to flow
Another layer of insulation
What is the smallest aluminum wire acceptable for any aircraft application?

What is derating?
Derating is operating a device at less than it’s rated maximum power
