Final 〰️ Flashcards
Electromagnetic radiation
Radiation that exhibits wave-like behavior and travels through space at the speed of light in a vacuum
Wavelength
The distance between two consecutive peaks or troughs in a wave
Frequency
The number of waves (cycles) per second that pass a given point in space
Photon
A particle of electromagnetic radiation
Quatanized
(Quantization) the concept that energy can occur only in discrete units called quanta
Ground state
The lowest possible energy state of an atom or a molecule
Excited state
A state of excess energy in an atom or molecule
Examples of electromagnetic radition
.Gamma-rays. Gamma rays have the highest frequency and photon energy in the electromagnetic spectrum
.X-rays. X-rays have frequencies and photon energies slightly lower than gamma rays.
.Ultraviolet (UV) Rays
.Visible light
.Infrared (IR) Rays
.Radio Waves
.Microwaves
Describe the relationship between frequency and waveleng
As the frequency increases, the wavelength gets shorter. As the frequency decreases, the wavelength gets longer.
Describe the relationship between energy and wavelength
As a wavelength increases in size, its frequency and energy (E) decrease
Describe the speed of light
Speed of light (2.998x10^8)
