What is an omniscient point of view?
All knowing narrator. Knows all the character thoughts, backstories, and feelings
What is symbolism?
An object, person, or event(s) that function as itself but also stands for something more than itself
What is a dynamic character?
Changes as a result of the story’s events
What is a connotative meaning of a word?
The emotional meaning of a word
What is a metaphor?
A figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true
What is direct characterization?
Author directly states what the character’s personality is like (e.g. cruel, kind)
What is a Protagonist?
The main character
What is a speaker in a poem?
The “voice” of a poem. Not always the author
What is an allusion?
A reference to a statement, person, a place, or events
What is a flat character?
- Stereotyped
- Not many traits
What is an internal conflict?
Conflict that takes place in a character’s own mind (e.g. man vs. self)
What is a denotattive meaning of a word?
The dictionary meaning of a word
What is a round character?
Fully developed; has many different personality traits
What is indirect characterization?
Showing a character’s personality through their actions, thoughts, feelings, or other characteristics or other character’s observations or reactions
What is foreshadowing?
Clues the writer puts in the story to give the reader a hint of what is to come
What is a Person vs. Person conflict?
A conflict between two characters in a story
What is a static character?
Does not change
What is the tone/attitude in a poem?
The way an author feels about the subject(s) in a poem
What is verbal irony?
Saying one thing but meaning something completely different
What is an Antagonist?
Opposes the protagonist
What is a third person point of view?
Narrator is not a character in the story and describes a character’s thoughts or actions by using “she”, “he”, or “they”
What is an external conflict?
A character struggles against an outside force
What is a Simile?
A figure of speech that compares two things using “like” or “as”
What is theme?
The central message or insight into life revealed through a literary work
What is a first person point of view?
One of the characters is telling the story, using the pronoun “I”
What is an unreliable narrator?
Only gives on point of view/perspective
Usually in first person
What is situational irony?
The opposite of what is expected
What is a Person vs. Society conflict?
A conflict between a person and the people or expectations in a society
What is a stanza in a poem?
A set of grouped lines
What is dramatic irony?
Showing a character’s personality through their actions, thoughts, feelings, or other characteristics or other character’s observations or reactions
