Prophets spoke with…
No vested interest
Finish the concept: The prophets were never in the forefront of the political system…
They were always in the background making sure someone was hearing the voice of God. The prophets were focused on the people of Israel because they are the people of God.
Finish the concept: the prophets were concerned with repentance as the agent of change in the hearts of Israel.
This allowed God to be judge. They weren’t concerned with the Orphan; they were more concerned about the person oppressing the orphan. The eyes of God and the prophets were on the oppressor.
The book of Isaiah…
The theme of the book is “Knowing.” The people knew that they were a covenant people. God was not going to let them forget what they already know. Isaiah was called to remind Israel of what they already knew and he was able to do this because he knew the voice of God. King Ajax was moved by the word of the Lord, but he did not want too a sign because he knew that he would have to submit to the authority of God. The prophets are always concerned with the inner life of the people.
The book of Jeremiah…
Jeremiah has a difficult message to preach. His message for the people is to submit to judgement. If God was silent the people would fall under the judgment of the world. Those that do go into Babylon are blessed. The kings still in Israel rebel and are crushed. God is placing an easy yoke on Israel. It is only when you resist that it becomes unbearable. Love demands justice, because without justice someone is being victimized.
The book of Ezekiel…
God primarily communicates with Ezekiel in visions. Ezekiel’s opening vision is of angels of the Lord pulling His chariot, opening the word of the Lord. The vision of the temple is progressive in nature. The temple looks fine on the outside, but the deeper Ezekiel gets into the temple the more preserve the evil inside is revealed. It takes the Lords help to know what is going on in the hearts of men. The death of Ezekiel’s wife demonstrates the loss of God’s relationship with His people, and they do not mourn because their relationship is separated by their sin. Deliverance is meaningless without repentance.
The book of Daniel
Daniels prophetic ministry begins when he depart himself from the culture of Babylon. Daniel is used by God because he is faithful, there is no dramatic calling. Gods judgement can vindicate you if you are faithful. You will not always understand what God is speaking through you. The other nations mentioned in these visions are gone, but Christs church is still there.
Book of Hosea
God still loves and commits to Israel even when Israel is unfaithful. He has to put his name on things that the marriage produces. So the redemptive process comes with certain controls.
Book of Joel
The day of the lord will bring darkness and confusion. He is pressuring you in the valley of decision.
Book of Amos
His message is getting in alignment with God. The significance of the plumb line if that it is Gods perfect standard. He gives the standard to judge our lives by.
Book of Obadiah
God is Judging Edom, but God is telling Israel to be careful about who they label an enemy of the Lord because it could be them. God’s glory, tells us about the nature of God in that He wants to show us mercy. Interacting with us and showing us mercy in a benefit for us, but it is also defending His glory. You were guilty and deserved my judgement. Yet, His glory demanded that He come and show us mercy.
Book of Jonah
The book is really about the response of Jonah. God is exposing Jonah’s heart. He wants you to be ultimately submitted, but you’ve got to signal to Him that you are willing to engage with what he wants you to do. Jonah and the whale is a type of Christ in the tomb.
Book of Micah
The judgment of the Lord is against Samaria and Jerusalem. God will walk in the high places of the earth. Can they stand up to the Lord being
there? God is not just coming to judge wickedness. He is coming to judge everything. Judgment is what you will want to happen. Judgment is not just cursing, or just blessing it involves an element of truth. The prophets stood most strongly against false prophets. Anything that can bless can curse. The pulpit blesses but if you pervert the voice of God, you end up cutting people off from the blessing of God. The only thing left is a
curse
