How We become culturally competent
Self-awareness- The more I can see myself as a cultural being the more I can see and understand someone else
Awareness of others-
Advocacy and Effective Intervention- I want to use therapy interventions that are a good fit for who they are and who I am
Intersectionality
appreciating all the different components of a person, overlap and impact a person and contribute to their perspective
Microassult
Blatant verbal, nonverbal, or environmental attacks intended to convey discriminatory and biased sentiments
Microinsult
Unintentional behaviors or verbal comments that convey rudeness or insensitivity or demean a person’s racial heritage/ identity, gender identity, religion, ability, or sexual orientation identity
Microinvalidation
verbal comments or behaviors that exclude, negate, or dismiss the psychological thoughts, feelings, or experiential reality of a target group
Forms of oppression
Overt- Intentional, blatant- give an example
Covert- done behind closed doors, aware but not going to admit it
Subtle- Microagressions
Microaggressions
Brief and commonplace daily verbal or behavioral indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults that potentially have a harmful or unpleasant psychological impact on the target person or group
Generic Characteristics of Counseling
Culture-bound values– emotional expression, individualism vs collectivism
Class bound values- Power dynamic, the therapist has a clearly defined role
Language variables– assumption that everyone speaks English, speech patterns– the way we speak is culturally influenced

Conformity- Dominate cultural values
Dissonance- Question Identity
Resistance and Immersion- appreciate the group and reject the dominant culture

Integrative Awareness- Self and other appreciated (synergistic articulation and awareness)
What phase is in the White Racial Identity model that is not in the others?
Naivete phase- Thinking racism doesn’t exist
Culturally Competent assessment
Know that it is a collaborative approach and allows the client to identify what they believe is the cause of what they are experiencing and what would be helpful
They contribute to the treatment plan
Social Justice Counseling/Therapy
Working for the client in the counseling session and outside
Ethnocentric Monoculturalism
White cultures are perceived as desirable and also normal
White culture has the power to impose standards
What is the Invisible Veil
Since people are all products of cultural conditioning, their values and beliefs represent an invisible veil that operates outside the level of conscious awareness
We have to recognize this exists and how we overcome that
My worldview is my truth and I am not always aware of all the factors of why I see it that way
Refugee-
- you are fleeing because of persecution or hardship
- may have greater access to resources because of status

-naivete stage- lack of social consciousness
acceptance stage- conscious belief
resistance stage- challenge assumptions
Redefinition stage- honest confrontation and increased comfort
Internalization stage- new social and personal identity
Asylum- seeker:
coming prepared and expected- can get help, social benefits, housing, validation to some experience, given a legal status
Refugee vs. Immigrant
A refugee is fleeing danger and seen differently– is able to access more resources vs. an Immigrant who may not be able to have access to such resources.
