filtration, distillation and chromatography Flashcards
1
Q
what does filtration separate
A
- insoluble solid from a solution (sand and water)
- small pieces of solid from gases ( filter in face ,mask removes covid particles from breathed out air)
- cannot separate a dissolved solid from its solution
2
Q
how does filtration work (sand + water)
A
- water passes through filter paper sand doesn’t
- filter paper has tiny holes and water particles are smaller than them
3
Q
when water passes through the holes what is it
A
the filtrate
4
Q
the sand stays in the filter paper what is it
A
residue
5
Q
how can you separate a mixture of sand and salt
A
- add water to mixture
- stir salt dissolves
- pour mixture though filter paper funnel and sand will remain
6
Q
what are the parts of filtration apparatus
A
filter paper, residue, filter funnel, clamp, conical flask, filtrate (water)
7
Q
how does distillation work (water + salt)
A
- water in salt solution boils forming steam (salt doesn’t boil because boiling point is much higher)
- steam leaves the solution
- steam travels through the condenser and cools down
- steam condenses to liquid water
- pure liquid water drips into the beaker
8
Q
evaporation vs distillation
A
evaporation - solute from solution
distillation - solvent from solution
9
Q
which moves further dye attracted more strongly to the water or dye attracted more strongly to the paper
A
dye attracted more strongly to the water
10
Q
the separated dyes make a _____
A
chromatogram
