Filtration and Crystallisation Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of filtration?
A
To separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
2
Q
Describe the process of filtration.
A
- Place filter paper folded in a cone shape into a funnel
- Pour mixture in
- Liquid part of mixture runs through paper, leaving behind a solid residue
3
Q
What is the purpose of crystallisation?
A
To separate a soluble solid from a solution
4
Q
Describe the process of crystallisation.
A
- Pour solution into evaporating dish and heat the solution
- Once you see crystals start to form, remove the dish from heat and leave the solution to cool
- Filter the crystals out of the solution, and leave them in a warm place to dry
