Art Cinema
European cinema- experimental in technique and narrative. Attempts to address the aesthetics of cinema (ex. French new wave or German cinema). No seamless cause and effect story line also there are no heroes
Auteur Theory
Holds that a film reflects the directors personal creative vision as if they were primary “auteur” (author). The auteurs creative voice is distinct enough to cause studio interference and the collective process.
Class
Film system produces and reproduces cultural signification. Film industries mode of production (geared for profit- capitalism). Consider the power of relations. Influenced by Karl Marx’s definition of class also by Antonio Gramsci’s definition. Marx says “class” refers to groups of people who have similar relations to the means of production.
Cut
Splicing of two shots together (jump cuts, continuity cuts, match cuts and cross cuts)
Connotation
How a word makes you feel= 1st order
Meaning a sign through cultural experiences= 2nd order
Denotation
Literal meaning of the word= 1st order
The image that actually appears on screen=2nd order
Discourse
Way in which texts are enunciated (brought into being. Cinematic discourse reproduces “reality” and tells stories about love, marriage, war and peace.
Editing
Refers to literally combining of shots together to make a film

Apparatus Theory
A model of spectatorship that argues that cinema is ideological because films are made to represent reality - everything has meaning
