angle-reverse angle

action cut
cutting from shot to shot for continuous action, adds excitement and drama to a scene
camera angle
placement of camera in relation to subject of image (high, low, wide)
camera movement
motion of camera that makes the image seem to change perspective (pans, tracking, steadicam)
cinematography
technical concerns of film (camera, film stock, lighting, camera angles, movement, distance)
close-up
shot where subject fills screen, detailed view of emotions, reactions, and states of mind
composition
arrangement of all elements within a scene (props, setting, lighting, characters, movement)
cut
instantaneous change from one shot to another (cross cuts, match cuts, jump cuts, montage cuts, cutaways)
deep focus
brings all planes of image into sharp focus (foreground, middle, background)
director of photography (DP)
individual in charge of all elements of the film
discontinuity
sudden and abrupt shifts from shot to shot to achieve a sense of chaos, disorder, confusion
effects (FX)
illusory/artificial elements added by technical procedure
establishing shot
opening shot of a sequence that establishes setting, time, major characters
frame
individual photographic element (24frames per second)
image
visual representation of a scene, flow expresses the basis of cinematic art
imaginary line (180°)
imaginary line drawn between characters to keep camera on a single perspective
matte
a partial covering that prevents light so another image can go into unexposed area at a later time
mise-en-scene
arrangement of all visual elements in a shot or frame of film
objective camera
shows objective (neutral) view of film
pan
shot where camera moves along a fixed axis
persistence of vision
capacity of eye to retain an image after it disappears; to fill in gaps between successive images
sequence
series of related shots that form a single, coherent unit of dramatic action
shot
