What does the lighting of the film show us?
What is a close-up shot?
Specifically shows the head of a character or a specific object.
Why is a close-up shot used?
Used to show the emotons of a character - e.g. capturing reactions. Also used to show how important an object is or what is happening to it.
(Extreme close-up is used to heighten the intensity of scene). When Truman looks at Sylvia’s pin ‘how’s it going to end?’
What is a bird’s eye view shot?
Used as an establishing shot to depict where the characters are. Shows where a character is going. In the Truman Show, the island of Seahaven is shown - depicts…
What is a low-angle shot?
When a subject is shot from a low angle.
Why is a low-angle shot used?
Used to show a subject looking superior and dominating. In the Truman Show, we see Truman posed in a low-angle shot. This shows the power of his fame. Christof did not want Truman to leave because he was so famous.
What is a point of view shot?
Positions the audience as if they are looking through a character’s eyes.
Why is a point-of-view shot used?
Used to make the audience feel like they are a part of what is happening and feel an emotional connection with the character.
What is a Dutch-angle shot?
The camera is slightly tilted.
Why is a Dutch-angle shot used?
Causes the shot to appear strangely angled and causes the audience to feel disoriented and uneasy. It also communicates an idea that be fear. When Truman is near the water, we see a Dutch film angle shot to show Truman looking at the water. This tells the audience that he is scared of something.
What is quick-cutting?
When several shots are used in very quick succession.
What is a high-angle shot?
A high-angle shot is when the camera portrays the object or character is shown below the camera, as the camera is in a high position.
Why is a high-angle shot used?
A high-angle shot is used to make the subject look inferior, powerless, or vulnerable. In the Truman Show, we see Christof talking to Truman, hunched over his device. Weir uses a high-angle shot to depict Christof as having no power of Truman.
