auteur theory
sarn explores how well a director translates their artistic vision on screen.
to be considered an auteur, director must have a recoginsable style.
curtiz (casablanca) not an auteur
curtiz has different genres so is considered a ‘journey craftsman’. with films such as yankee doodle dandy in comparision to casablanca, they are completely different genres and styles. which means he does not carry specific, recognisable styles.
he has not clear trademark, apart from in film noirs, eg like in casablanca expressionist lighting is used to create meaning and representations. shadows represent cross of lorraine(free france) and ricks split self.
he has a classical hollywood style rather than auturistic, relfects signiture styles of the studio, rather than individual. eg smocky bars and fogy runways to hide cheap sets. dark lighting and seamless editing.
casablanca is the work of many skilled craftsmens. thr studiostystem were churning out films so they need alot of help. different people were assigned to specific tasks. the control lay beyond the director and with the producer and studio boss.
penn (bonnie and clyde) considered an auteur
penns politics and interests in social justice pervade in this film and earlier work. in the 1960s when b and c was filmed and released, there was a rapid change. the Usa were facing socialdivision with race and sex conficts.
combining comdey and tragedy whilst working with clear genres, rejecting the hays code with sex and violence. eg extreme close up in opening scene of bonnie of lips and eyes to sexualise her. inclusing blood in final scene
follows the thne OV facade vs reality. use of dreamlike asect ehrn bonnie reunties with her mum ina filter. lack of music in robbery scenes to make them more realistic.
screenwriters influences by french new wave and auteurs of classical hollywood. in new holywood morals are different.
french new wave
added more personal and experiement feel to cinema, the rise of anti hero and sexuality in the new american cinema.
tend to break the rules of continuety editing and using free editing style, jumpcuts.
shot in location, using natural lighting and handheld cameras.
