What is filial cannibalism?
Parental consumption of their own offspring
What did this study investigate?
Filial cannibalism and nest characteristics in the sand goby with paternal care
How was the study undertaken?
- Sand gobys were seperated into mating pairs
- Clear division were added in the tank
- A predator (perch) was placed in the other side of the tank
- Control = no perch
What were the results?
Sand gobys always ate part of their clutch - predation had no significant effect on this
Some fish consume part of their clutch: Partial filial cannibolism, Why?
Use resources gained to care for remaining clutch
How does parent predation risk effect brood care in some fish?
Increased brood abandonment
