Co-articulation
The influence of one sound on a neighboring sound.
Monophthong
A simple vowel, composed of a single configuration of the vocal organs.
Diphthong
A complex vowel, composed of a sequence of two different configurations of the vocal organs.
Articulation
The motion or positioning of some part of the vocal tract with respect to some other surface of the vocal tract in the production of a speech sound.
Articulatory Description
The description of the motion or positioning of the parts of the vocal tract that are responsible for the production of a speech sound.
Articulatory Gesture
A movement of a speech organ in the production of speech. (Ex: The movement of the velum for the production of a nasal consonant)
Articulatory Phonetics
The study of the production of speech sounds.
Bilabial
Consonants are made by bringing both lips close together. (five such sounds in English: p, b, m, w, wh)
Labiodental
Consonants are made with the lower lip against the upper front teeth. (f, v)
Interdentals
Are made with the tip of the tongue protruding between the front teeth. (th, thy)
Alveolar Ridge
The bony ridges of the upper and lower jaws that contain the sockets for the teeth.
Alveolar
Sounds are made with the tongue tip at or near the front of the upper Alveolar ridge.
Post-Alveolar
Made with the front of the tongue just behind the Alveolar ridge, right at the front of the hard palate.
Intonation
Commonly refers to the pattern of pitch movements across a stretch of speed such as a sentence.
Pitch Accent
A change in fundamental frequency used to put prominence on a particular word in an utterance.
