What does JPEG stand for and do?
Joint Photographers Expert Group:
Supports 8 or 24 bit colour
lossy compression - each time compressed file bits are discarded
Digital cameras often save images in JPEG format
Uses IPEG or JPG file name as extension
What does PNG stand for and do?
Portable Network Graphics:
Supports 8 or 24 bit colour
Open standard (anyone free to use)
Lossless compression - when file is compressed no data bits are lost
What does GIF stand for and do?
Graphics Interchange Format:
Plain gif like snapshot
Transparent gif with invisible background and seems to be painted
Animated gif, gif images quickly changed to appear animated
BMP?
Bit Mapped Picture:
Supports 1, 4, 8 and 24 bit colour
No compression
Standard Windows image format with paint or paintbrush programs
BMP files are very large cuz no compression
SVG?
Scalar Vector Graphic:
Used mainly for points, lines, curves rather than grids of pixels
File is small while being able to scale big and small without loosing clarity
SVG can be animated
Not widely used
TIFF?
Tagged Image File Format:
Supports 1, 4, 8 and 24 bits per pixel
Mainly used to exchange files from different computer softwares
Six different ‘flavours’ of tiff files
EXIF?
Exchangeable Image File Format:
Incorporated into many writing softwares on cameras
Contains metadata about image captured
Contains info about shutter speed, exposure, image size, compression
To standardise exchange between digital cameras and viewing and editing softwares
MPEG?
Motion Picture Experts Group - Video:
Used for videos and movies
PDF?
Portable Data Format:
Created using software from Adobe
Converts documents from Microsoft word and others to read only documents
Viewed with Adobe reader
ZIP?
Compressed data files
