Reduces the size of the file and makes it good for use on the web (uploading, downloading and sharing)
It does reduce quality though

No information is discarded when saving
Higher quality of file
Large file size due to need for more memory

What is definition of .png?
Supports lossy compression so good for web use a s it has small file sizes. Also supports transparency so good for logos etc.
What is definition of .jpg?
Versatile format that can be compressed but also saved at high resolution. Suitable for both web and print use. Very commonly used.
What is definition of .tiff
Lossless so able to maintain very high resolutions. Perfect for printing. Very large file sizes though.
What is definition of .gif
Small file sizes and supports transparency. Limited colour palette so better for web buttons and logos.

A lossy file type which is widely supported. Can be compressed to small sizes but does lose quality.

High quality file types which are mostly used for Windows. They store uncompressed data so file sizes can be large.

High quality file types which are mostly used for Apple OS. Not widely supported.

Small file sizes and supports transparency. Limited colour palette so better for web buttons and logos.

Usually denoted as .mp4, using the H.264 compression, these file types are widely accepted. They retain high quality for small file sizes. MPEG-4 H.264 are used for Blu-ray.
